Every pet food starts as a formula. A lot happens between that formula and the bowl.

Here at Kansas State University @ Pet Food Collab, students have the chance to try that first step themselves in hands-on BESTMIX formulation activities with Andrea Llovera. The goal is to give them room to explore the software, ask questions, and connect what they’re learning with the decisions made in industry.

Conversations with students are a big part of why we came. We’re here to listen, compare perspectives, and bring useful observations back to our team.

Wild game meat, rooibos, ornamental fish, animal taste testing… and an unexpected elevator adventure.

Nordic Petfood certainly gave us plenty to talk about!

Beyond the familiar faces and great conversations, there were some fascinating perspectives on where the pet food industry is heading:

But conferences are also about the people.

Our colleague Flor finally met the Montego team in person, 2 to 3 years after implementing BESTMIX at their facility in South Africa. The meeting became even more memorable when they ended up stuck in an elevator together. Everyone made it out, and we have the photo to prove it.

A few days of fresh perspectives, familiar faces, new connections and conversations that continued well beyond the conference sessions.

Thank you to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is and Patrícia Massae Oba for inviting our team to the I-PETS session, “Decoding the Pet Microbiome: From Lab Tools to Real Life Impact.”

Jonathan Turck from Texas A&M University’s Gastrointestinal Laboratory walks through how researchers study the pet microbiome and what different measurements can tell us.

One example he explains: a lower percentage of a particular bacterium doesn’t necessarily mean there is less of it. Its share can fall because other bacteria have increased.

For those working in pet food research and nutrition who missed the session, the recording is now available.

Your formula looks perfect. On paper.

10% moisture. Nutrients balanced. Cost on target. Compliance checked.

Then it hits the production floor.

Raw materials don't match the averages. The dryer has its own ideas. Too dry, you give product away. Too wet, you risk shelf life.

Most plants accept this as normal. It's not.

The real problem? Formulation, production and quality are working from different numbers.

We're heading back to Kansas State University for Pet Food Collab on October 14–15.

Our work with K-State has already given us time with students and faculty. This visit brings another opportunity to connect around the questions people face when developing pet food, and the skills students will use in industry.

Carmen Sook, Andrea Llovera and Hannah Frank will be there for the student activities, research discussions and conversations with pet food teams.
