The EMEA session of our 2-day AI Workshop for Database & APEX Developers has now wrapped up, and we wanted to share a bit about how we approached the development of this training.
When we created UC AI (our open-source PL/SQL SDK that lets you work with multiple AI providers directly in Oracle Database, no Python required), we kept running into the same pattern: data engineers and APEX developers are uniquely positioned to drive AI adoption, but most AI training assumes you're working in Python notebooks, not PL/SQL.
So we designed the workshop around how database developers actually work:
→ You use your own database (19c or higher, no 23ai required)
→ Every concept starts with fundamentals, then you implement it yourself
→ Examples are real-life data engineering scenarios, not toy demos
→ You build an AI agent step by step and take home working code
The curriculum moves from LLM basics through structured JSON output, RAG systems (retrieval-augmented generation, where AI pulls relevant documents before answering), vision-based document understanding, tool/function calls where AI executes PL/SQL, all the way to autonomous AI agents.
What made this format work: it's not a lecture. People wrote real code, hit real problems, and left with a reference implementation they could immediately apply.
The biggest "aha" moment for most participants? Seeing how much you can accomplish by keeping AI processing close to your data inside the Oracle database rather than shipping everything to external systems.
If you've missed it, we still have another session next week.
