Meet Andrea El Haddad, a PhD student in regenerative medicine, who is exploring new ways to study osteoarthritis at imec.

Osteoarthritis affects around 600 million people worldwide. To investigate this complex disease, Andrea is developing a platform based on conducting polymers, materials that can bridge the gap between biological tissues and conventional electronics.

Andrea's ultimate goal is to better understand cellular behavior through advanced technologies and help researchers uncover what happens in joint tissues as osteoarthritis develops.

"𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗮 𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗲𝗹."

Growing up in India, Darayus Adil Patel learned an important lesson: we are not defined by the labels others place on us.

Looking back, there's one piece of advice he'd share with his younger self: first look within. And whatever answer you find, pursue it with passion.

Today, he works alongside colleagues from more than 100 nationalities. For him, that's one of the most rewarding aspects of working at imec. Because the best ideas don't emerge in silos. They emerge when diverse perspectives, experiences and ambitions come together.

And that's what excites him most: not just imagining the future, but helping create it every day.

🎥 Meet Darayus and hear the advice he'd share with his younger self.

"𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘆."

Growing up, Wim Fyen didn't always have an easy childhood. Looking back, he realizes it was his humour, curiosity and passion for science that shaped who he is today.

Now, he combines those strengths every day to help create technology with a positive impact.

Looking back, there's one thing his younger self would never have believed: that one day, he'd be able to combine his passion for science, have fun, and help change the world.

Because innovation happens when people are empowered to be themselves and build on what makes them unique.

🎥 Meet Wim and hear the advice he'd share with his younger self.

Before becoming a researcher at imec, Aarti Rathi first learned one important lesson: “𝗛𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗯𝗶𝗴.” 💭

We asked our colleagues what advice they would give their younger selves, and in this video, Aarti shares the story behind hers.

Growing up in India, she was fortunate to have parents who believed deeply in the power of education and gender equality, and encouraged her to pursue opportunities that were not always considered obvious for girls in her community.

Today, she combines a career in research with a strong focus on wellbeing and balance, proving that ambition and self-care can go hand in hand.

Because at imec, innovation happens when people can truly be themselves.

🎥 Meet Aarti and hear the advice she would pass on to her younger self.
