Operational indicators provide a means to assess and monitor the quality of care delivered within the ICU. They help identify potential risks, deviations from established protocols, and areas requiring improvement. By ensuring compliance with safety standards and best practices, these indicators contribute to a safer environment for critically ill patients.

Efficient resource management is also critical in the high-pressure setting of an ICU. Operational indicators offer a quantitative assessment of resource utilization, enabling healthcare administrators to optimize staffing levels, equipment usage, and bed occupancy. This not only enhances cost-effectiveness but also ensures that resources are allocated where they are most needed.

Unlock the value of ICU operational indicators and learn how to calculate them by downloading the eBook ‘ICU Operational Indicators’. Link in bio.

On March 8th, we celebrate the resilience and bravery of women, acknowledging that the struggle for gender equality persists. In our reflection, we recognize that issues such as inequality, femicide, harassment, violence, and sexism persist in our society, requiring the collective commitment of all to combat these issues.

Epimed is proud to be a company made up mostly of women, who represent 66% of our employees in different countries and 81% of our data collectors spread across hospitals throughout Brazil.

Therefore, on this special day, we want to send a big shoutout and a heartfelt thank you to all the amazing women who play a crucial part in making Epimed the awesome company it is, with great excellence, care and dedication in all their roles.

To all our employees, customers and followers, Happy International Women's Day!

Using analytics to evaluate my ICU performance

Recent progress in the electronic medical records (EMR) for ICU and cloud-based analyses allows us to apply the Donabedian principles, created 40 years ago, in near real-time. Basically, there are three types of indicators based on the Donabedian Categorization (Donabedian 1978): 1. Structure: describes the organization, facilities, and staffing. It often presents aspects that can be improved with increased investments; 2. Process: describes the care process between the caregiver and the patient. It usually depends on which aspects of care are easier to change; 3. Result: describes the result, often at the patient level. Ultimately, it is the most important indicator. The first step in evaluating ICU performance is to define the indicators that should be monitored. Second, ensure the collection and storage in a clinical database. There are several available. Finally, compare the results with other ICUs, through benchmarking tools (Guidet et al. 2016 and Salluh et al 2018).

How can Benchmarking assist in the ICU Management?

Benchmarking is a management strategy that consists of the process of searching and comparing the best practices evidenced in the real world. Epimed Solutions, a leading company in the clinical information segment, allows an analysis to measure the quality and performance of the ICU. Through the software, which is currently used in more than 2000 ICUs in seven countries where physicians (via computers or mobile devices) can access real-time information on key quality metrics, risk-adjusted outcomes, and adherence to prevention of adverse events and infection. Access to this data allows you to use the information as a target for quality assessment and improvement initiatives.

May 12th - International Nurses Day
Being a nurse means helping, being close, and caring.
Nursing has ancient origins and, for centuries, has trained professionals committed to the health and well-being of human beings. All over the world, they work tirelessly to provide people with care and attention, when and where they need it.
Nurses are the backbone of any healthcare system and need appropriate conditions to work with quality and safety; investing in nursing is investing in society as a whole.
International Nurses Day has been celebrated around the world since 1965. However, the date was not officially established until 1974, based on the decision of the International Council of Nurses. May 12th was chosen as a tribute to Florence Nightingale, considered the mother of modern nursing. To this day, Florence's dedication and care for human life inspire nurses all over the world.
Epimed Solutions pays tribute to nursing and nurses for their tireless, transformative work!

May 5 is World Hand Hygiene Day. Every year, the World Health Organization (WHO) leads a global representation on the relevance of the topic in health care.

This year, the theme is "Together, we can accelerate action to prevent infections and antimicrobial resistance in health care and build a culture of safety and quality in which hand hygiene improvement is given high priority".

Hand hygiene saves millions of lives when performed at the right time and in the right way during health care delivery. According to WHO, improving hand hygiene also saves approximately USD 16.5 in healthcare expenditure for every US dollar invested.

Join us in this initiative! We encourage everyone to promote and practice this action. After all, clean hands are protected hands!
