A "language task" usually refers to Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT). It is an approach where you learn or assess a foreign language by completing meaningful, real-world activities. And this is exactly what we did in Babbeluurtje Engels Gevorderden. Our teacher Sabina asked us to prepare a proposal for the end of year excursion. We worked in two groups and we both had an appealing suggestion. One group wanted to visit Dunkirk and the other group Bruges and the new museum BRUSK. The Dunkirk trip won the vote and so on Wednesday 20 May 2026 the students of Babbeluurtje Engels Gevorderden left early in the morning for Dunkirk. After a cup of coffee (Americano, please 😉) on the promenade, we visited the Dunkirk 1940 Museum. We prepared our visit to the museum in the English lesson, so we knew all about Operation Dynamo. We were really impressed by the set-up of the museum. We read the information and watched the video on the evacuation of 338.000 allied soldiers (esp. British and French) by Royal Navy warships and hundred of civilian "little ships". The "miracle of Dunkirk" took place from 26 May till 4 June 1940, so almost 86 years ago. At lunchtime we went to La Halle. This is a top fish monger with a few tables and a terrace. They serve what is basically a seafood platter on ice. You choose what you want; oysters, salmon, halibut, conger, mackerel ... It was all delicious. After the meal in the sun and out of the wind, we headed to the city hall of Dunkirk where we met our guide Elise for a walk in the city centre. We admired the stained glass window in the city hall, learned more about the church and walked to the Jean Bart square. In front of the Maritime and Port Museum, there are 3 big ships to be visited. Finally, we climbed the tower of the Saint-Éloi Belfry. It is a UNESCO World Heritage-listed bell tower offering 360-degree panoramic views of the city and coastline. Although an elevator took us most of the way up, we still had to climb the final 65 steep, narrow stairs to reach the absolute top. But it was worthwhile because the views were amazing. Before we drove home again, we had a final stop in Maison Vaucamps on the promenade where some of us marvelled about their merveilleux. A day well spent ! And now the Bruges trip ! If you are interested in an interesting day in Bruges and the museum BRUSK, please join Engels Babbeluurtje Gevorderden ... see you in September !
