I’ve been following kenan alkuwatly | كنان القوتلي’s work for years and have always admired his approach to craft and design. So when he asked me to create the branding for MSN3 DMSHQ مصنع دنشق I was really happy to be part of it.

MSN3 DMSHQ | مصنع دمشق is a design and research platform that reimagines Damascene craft for today and tomorrow. It works with artisans to preserve centuries of knowledge while making space for experimentation, new ideas, and contemporary design.

A series of cover proposals created for the first issue of WIRED Middle East Magazine.

The artwork was originally designed for the cover but ultimately found its place within the magazine instead.

For this post I’m sharing some of the colour explorations and variations developed throughout the design process.

The artwork explores ideas of connection, communication, and technology. More about the concept and the final printed piece in my next post.

Happy to have been part of this year’s typeforce 14 exhibition among so many talented artists!
at Co-prosperity in Bridgeport Chicago, USA.

This artwork is an experimental piece based on Arabic typography, inspired by the Kufic script. It features the phrase ‘كُنْ كَمَا تَكُونُ’, which means ‘Be as you are’ in English.
