Policy-based lending by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) is expected funnel several-hundred million dollars into government's ambitious recipe to heal electricity crises by enhancing solar-power generation, officials said.

State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Mir Shahe Alam today said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has set up a solar panel on the rooftop of his Gulshan residence from which 1200 units of electricity are being supplied to the national grid.

Bangladesh has around 60 lakh battery-powered rickshaws, consuming an estimated 3 lakh megawatt-hours of electricity annually, according to the report. Their charging accounts for about 5% of the country’s total electricity generation.
The report says illegal charging connections contribute to an estimated Tk4,000 crore in lost government revenue each year, while the annual value of electricity used for charging is estimated at around Tk21,000 crore.

The energy crisis is no longer merely a matter of households struggling with shortages of gas and electricity; it is a thr*eat to the country’s economic future. It is because energy security has a direct bearing on industrialisation, investment, employment generation and export competitiveness. Acute shortages of gas and electricity have recently crippled production in hundreds of factories. Energy experts therefore opine that the government and the private sector have to work in tandem to find a sustainable and long-term solution to the energy crisis.
