I just put together some simple "House Rules" to help us stay one step ahead of scammers and hackers. In 2026, AI voice cloning and fake texts are getting harder to spot, so it's time we leveled up our digital defenses!

Check out these quick tips to protect your accounts and our family's privacy. Let's keep the "unwanted" out!



🛡️ Our Family Digital "House Rules"

Cyber-attacks are getting smarter (even using AI to mimic voices!), but we can stay safe by sticking to these simple habits. Here is how we can protect ourselves from scams and hackers.

1. The "Call Back" Rule (AI Voice Scams)
AI can now clone a person's voice using just 3 seconds of audio from social media. If you get a call from a family member (even from their "real" number) asking for money or sharing an emergency:
Don't panic. Scammers use urgency to stop you from thinking.
Hang up, then call that person back at their known number.
Pick a "Safe Word":** Let's agree on a secret word or phrase only we know. If someone calls in a "crisis," ask for the word.

2. Don't "Click" – Go to the Source
If you get a text or email saying your bank account is locked, your Netflix payment failed, or a package is waiting:
Avoid the links.** Most links in texts (Smishing) lead to fake websites that steal your login.
Open the App instead.** If it's real, the alert will be waiting for you inside the official app or on the official website you typed in yourself.

3. Use a "Lockbox" for Passwords
Using the same password everywhere is like having one key that opens your house, car, and safe.
Use a Password Manager.** Apps like Bitwarden or 1Password remember everything for you. Turn on 2FA.** If a site offers "Two-Factor Authentication," turn it on! It means even if a hacker has your password, they still can't get in without a code from your phone.

4. The "1-Minute Tech Check"
Once a month, let's do these three things:
Update Everything: Software updates aren't just for "new features"; they "patch" holes that hackers use to get in.
Restart your phone: A simple restart can actually clear out certain types of temporary malware.
Check your Privacy: Go to your Facebook/Instagram settings and make sure your posts aren't "Public." The less scammers know about your life, the harder it is for them to trick you.
