NHCRF Condemns U.S. Veto and 10-Nation Opposition Blocking Palestinian Statehood

Despite overwhelming support at the UN General Assembly, the path to Palestinian independence remains obstructed

At the recent session of the United Nations General Assembly, an overwhelming 142 countries voted in favor of a resolution supporting the establishment of a Palestinian state. Only 10 countries — Israel, United States, Argentina, Hungary, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay, and Tonga — voted against the proposal.

The National Human Rights Crime Reporter Foundation (NHCRF) believes that the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination and statehood is enshrined in international law. The UN General Assembly’s decision was a historic step in support of justice and human rights. However, the U.S. veto at the Security Council remains a major obstacle to Palestine’s full recognition as a sovereign state.

NHCRF’s Statement:

> “The world’s 142 countries stood on the right side of history by supporting Palestinian statehood. But the United States and a handful of countries have stained the principles of human rights and democracy by opposing it. For decades the Palestinian people have endured oppression and bloodshed. Now is the time to secure their legitimate right to a free and independent state.”

NHCRF calls on the international community to end the practice of using veto powers to block legitimate and humanitarian decisions. It also urges the people of Bangladesh and human rights defenders everywhere to stand firmly in solidarity with Palestine.
