Want a more accessible entry point to physical media? CDs might be the solution

CD sales reached 16.3 million units in the U.S. during the first half of 2026, rising 16% while vinyl managed just 2.4%.

That looks like a remarkable comeback for a format that spent years being treated as obsolete. Younger buyers are purchasing discs again, major retailers are expanding their share of physical music sales, and manufacturers are seeing demand rise after decades of decline.

Yet the revival looks very different from the last era when CDs ruled music. The buyers are not all using them the same way, and a surprisingly small part of the market is having an outsized effect on the totals.

The numbers are real. But what they actually reveal about the CD’s return is much less straightforward.

You read the hype sticker. You check who mastered it. Maybe you even look up the pressing before spending the money. And somehow you can still end up on a forum trying to figure out what was actually used to make the record.

Four years after the MoFi mess, that really shouldn’t be this hard. The strange part is that some labels are already giving buyers a pretty clear answer. What happens with the rest is where that 0.7% number starts getting interesting.
