You can spend thousands protecting your business and still have someone using the same password for five different accounts.
That’s the reality of cybersecurity.
Some of the biggest risks to a business aren't highly sophisticated attacks.

They're everyday habits.
A password shared between staff.

MFA that was never switched on.

Most businesses have some form of backup in place. What we find less often is businesses that have actually verified their backup works — meaning they've tried to restore from it.

An untested backup is not a backup. It's a hope.

Here's what a solid backup strategy looks like for a regional business:

✔ 3-2-1 Rule: 3 copies of your data, on 2 different types of storage, with 1 copy offsite or in the cloud
✔ Automated daily backups — not manual ones that depend on someone remembering
✔ Tested quarterly: actually restore a file or folder from your backup to confirm it works
✔ Encrypted backups, especially for sensitive client or financial data
✔ Clear recovery time: do you know how long it would take to restore your systems? You should.

Our Director Jesse has just come home from three days at Microsoft’s Executive Briefing Centre in Seattle, where New Future IT was invited to Microsoft’s Executive AI Experience. He saw Microsoft 365 Copilot and Copilot Chat in action, explored how AI agents can run business processes with minimal human input, and got a close look at GitHub Copilot and Windows Autopilot. Exciting stuff.

But the message Microsoft kept coming back to was something else entirely. AI is only as valuable as the data it can access and the security controls that govern it.

In other words, before you switch on AI, it pays to ask yourself a few honest questions. Is your data organised and trustworthy? Are your security, identity and access settings set up properly? Is your sensitive information protected? Do you have the right governance in place? And would your team trust that AI is working safely inside those boundaries?

Doing business in regional Australia changes what you expect from the people you rely on.

Because when you're operating hundreds of kilometres from the nearest major centre, “we’ll send someone out” means something very different.

You learn pretty quickly that distance matters.

Weather matters.

Response times matter.
And when something your business relies on stops working, waiting a few days for someone interstate to figure it out isn't always an option.

Most business owners don’t ignore cybersecurity because they don’t care.

They’re busy running a business.
Looking after their people. Keeping operations moving. Managing clients, cash flow, projects and everything else that comes with being responsible for an organisation.

Cybersecurity often sits quietly in the background with an assumption:
“Our IT is looking after that… aren’t they?”
And that's the question worth asking before Cyber Security Awareness Month arrives in October.
Not “Are we completely cyber secure?”

But:
Do we actually know where we stand?
Are MFA and strong password practices in place across the business?
Are your backups working, and have they actually been tested?
Would your team recognise a convincing phishing email?
Does someone proactively watch for vulnerabilities, or do you find out there's a problem when something stops working?

For regional businesses, the consequences of getting this wrong can be particularly disruptive. Recovery isn't just an IT problem. It can mean staff unable to work, services interrupted, customers affected, and leadership suddenly dealing with an issue nobody had time for.

Jesse is off to Seattle after New Future IT received a very special invitation from Microsoft to attend their first Executive AI Experience at the Microsoft campus in Redmond.
For the next three days, Jesse will be at Microsoft’s Executive Briefing Center, immersing himself in all things Microsoft Copilot and AI, learning directly from the people shaping where this technology is heading and exploring what it means for businesses like the ones we support every day.

We’re looking forward to sharing some of the journey over the next few days, and even more importantly, bringing the ideas, knowledge and practical applications Jesse learns back to our team and our clients.

It's the fear of changing.
