You know what makes your community tick? Small business.

They don't just serve you, employ, and sponsor. They also keep other people in the workforce.

The unsung heroes of my business are the people the aren't even visibly a part of it - the freight guys, the printers, the window cleaners, the coffee up the street, Signarama, the tradies that built our offices, the hundred batteries I have to buy every year from Eyre Trading, the blinds and plants we bought this week just to keep our office looking fresh.

We're just a small fry, but we're often supporting people around us. We're not the only ones.

7 years ago I put this sign on my window.

Over the last year, it's become more clear than ever that my purpose as a designer has always been much bigger, and I'm slowly finding my way to whatever that is.

The message then, as it is now, is to think 'what are the bigger opportunities for your business?' How do I encourage you to show up in a way that get's you noticed? Where are the avenues of opportunity, and how will what you've built (and building) appeal to that opportunity? How can I help get you there?

Today I had 2 conversations. Both businesses have been quietly bubbling away at their thing without much presence.

The first - A one-man contractor in a niche skillset - my notes were 'where are the big ongoing contracts and partnerships for this guy?' How can I make his business appeal to these people so that he will be so full of work he'll have to consider becoming an employer?

The second - A small SA producer I spent the conversation recommending wholesale opportunities, and potential stockist affiliations. Let's make their packaging so beautiful it'll sell itself!

The takeaway? It's never just been about the logo design for me. Yes, I'm a designer & I think visually, but the visuals are always there to support a bigger idea; the 'pipe dream'. Yes, I want you to think outside of Whyalla, outside of your comfort zone, outside of fear, & know those opportunities are out there for you. They aren't reserved for someone else. They are there for those that seek and ask for them.

So whatever you're thinking, think bigger! It's a mindset & a journey.

The Mount Laura Homestead Museum, Whyalla has had its first big improvement since the 1970s.

I scanned, restored and printed over 100 historical SA National Trust photos, before helping to install them in newly fitted-out displays. I think they're straight?

If you're a history seeker, a long-term local, or a visiting tourist, it's time to revisit!

10 months ago, my kid smashed his arm in a bike stack. I'm in Adelaide next week (Mon-Thurs) so he can have orthopedic surgery to remove the rods and reset the bones because things didn't heal as we hoped.

It's going to be a chaotic few days for our fam. I'm going to be out of action. Planned return to work Friday.
