Quick question for local business owners — when did you last check what your cyber insurance policy actually covers? 🤔

Not just that you have one. But what it covers, what the exclusions are, and whether you'd actually be paid out if something went wrong.

We've put together a free guide for South West Victoria businesses that breaks it all down in plain English — no jargon, no sales pitch.

Inside you'll find:
✔️ What a good policy should cover (and what most don't)
✔️ The exclusions that catch businesses out at claim time
✔️ How AI and deepfake scams are creating new coverage blind spots
✔️ Questions to take to your broker before you renew
✔️ A handy checklist to tick off before you sign

A cyber incident costs regional businesses an average of $49,600. The guide is free.

Week 4: Quantum Readiness

Quantum computing is advancing quickly and while it’s not mainstream yet, it will eventually break many of today’s encryption methods. That means the sensitive data we protect today could be at risk tomorrow. Businesses that start preparing now will be in the best position to adapt when the shift arrives.

One way to prepare is by using the LATICE framework:
• Locate: Identify where cryptography is used in your systems — from software to cloud services to internal databases.
• Assess: Evaluate which systems are most critical and most exposed.
• Triage: Prioritise which risks to address first, based on impact and likelihood.
• Implement: Begin trialling or migrating towards post-quantum cryptography solutions as they become available.
• Communicate: Keep leadership, staff, and suppliers informed about your readiness strategy.
• Educate: Train your team so they understand why quantum matters and what steps the business is taking.

Action step: Even if quantum computing feels futuristic, start by mapping out your encryption dependencies now. This gives you clarity on what needs to change and avoids scrambling when the technology becomes mainstream.

Not sure where to start? Partnering with a Managed Service Provider (MSP) ensures you’ve got expert guidance and proactive planning for the future.

Week 3: Supply Chain Security

Your business is only as strong as the partners you rely on. Third-party suppliers can unintentionally introduce vulnerabilities into your network.

Steps to reduce risk:
• Ask vendors about their cyber practices
• Include minimum security standards in contracts
• Monitor critical suppliers regularly

A secure supply chain = a stronger business.

All organisations should consider cyber supply chain risk management. If a supplier, manufacturer, distributor or retailer (i.e. businesses that constitute a cyber supply chain) are involved in products or services used by an organisation, there will be a cyber supply chain risk originating from tho...

Week 2 is about Legacy Tech

Outdated systems = increased cyber risk. Unsupported software and ageing devices don’t receive critical updates, leaving open doors for cyber criminals. Even if those systems are still “working fine,” they can become the weakest link in your business security.

What you can do:
• Identify systems past their end-of-life and document them.
• Apply compensating controls (like network segmentation and stricter monitoring) until you can upgrade.
• Develop a replacement plan that fits your budget and business growth.

Pro tip: If you don’t have the time, tools, or in-house expertise to manage legacy risks, consider outsourcing your IT to a Managed Service Provider (MSP). An MSP can:
• Monitor your systems 24/7
• Help you plan upgrades strategically
• Keep your business compliant with the latest cyber standards
• Provide proactive support so small issues don’t turn into big problems

If you can’t see it, you can’t protect it.

Event logging records activity across your systems so you can:
• Spot suspicious behaviour early
• Investigate incidents
• Strengthen your defences

Action step: Make sure logging is enabled on key systems and that someone is reviewing the reports.
