We don’t usually wade into party politics—but this issue deserves attention.

Small businesses are being told to absorb card-processing costs rather than pass them on. Meanwhile, the ATO has decided it will stop accepting credit-card payments after 30 November.

For many businesses, paying tax by credit card is an important short-term cash-flow option while they wait for customers to pay them.

So small business carries the fees, the cash-flow pressure and the risk—but the ATO can simply remove the option when the same costs become inconvenient?

Whatever your politics, that’s a double standard.

If businesses are expected to absorb these costs, the government and the ATO should be prepared to do the same.

**One rule for Canberra. Another for small business.**
