Wonderful WordPress

This months Talking Tech will be presented by one of our diploma students and business owner of Cope IT, John Cope

WordPress is the versatile and popular website building frameworks available today. It is estimated that more than 30% of websites are built using WordPress. Like most open source applications it can have a steep learning curve which makes it difficult to get started.

John started Cope IT in 2014 and built it into a successful business focusing on hosting and building custom made websites. He will show you the important tricks of the trade that will help you build your first website quickly without any coding.

This presentation is for small business who don't have the budget to hire a website developer or some who is considering web developments.

Hope to see you there

Looking forward to seeing you all at TT in Wagga next monday. Our speaker is Dr Murray Woods from Column 72 talking about the IBM Mainframe Trainee Program
"The System Z14 is the most recent addition to a long line of IBM mainframes stretching back to the 1960’s. Learn how the System Z platform is used by major corporations throughout the world to process data and how it is hosting disruptive technologies such as the ADI economy, blockchain and machine learning. You will better appreciate the way your Facebook profile can determine whether you get to visit the US next year and how social media is used to influence election results.

The skills required to manage System Z technology into the future are in short supply. Column 72 is presently recruiting Diploma students for a unique trainee program in conjunction with the University of Canberra and supported by IBM. If you are selected, you will:
• Be employed in an IBM mainframe environment for three years full-time on full salary.
• Graduate with a Bachelor of Information and Mainframe Technology at no cost to you."

The Talking Tech team would like to thank Jock Graham from Wi-Sky for joining us last night! Jock prepared an interesting presentation and discussed the importance of rural connectivity.

Jock highlighted the need for technology such as Wi-Sky in the rural and regional areas including for safety, convenience and entertainment. He'd like to help give people in the country areas affordable and reliable access to internet services just like the city people have. One of their aims is to provide access to those who may only be able to access satellite services which can be quite costly and have high latency. Additionally, another service available such as 3G/4G, is the most expensive way to browse the web, this is where Wi-Sky is beneficial for farmers.

It was great to see lots of new faces, we hope to see you again into the future. If anyone has any ideas for future guest speakers, please let us know!

The Talking Tech team would like to thank Rod Owen for joining us last night. Rod gave us a timeline of how education has evolved in his life and how new methods and strategies have been introduced. The online world is ever evolving and this is where Rod has had experience in how MOOCs are beneficial for anyone. MOOCs are online courses available for anyone who would like to get further certified or expand their knowledge. A highlight is that many MOOCs providers supply some of their courses for free with the option of paying to obtain higher level certificates. There is flexibility in MOOCs as most of the courses are offered from 2 weeks, up to a year for some.

If anyone has a topic they think would be interesting or knows a guest speaker that would be interested in jumping on board, please let us know! We are always open to hearing about a variety of current and emerging technologies in the world around us.
