🧡 Feel Good Story Friday

Sometimes you finish a job and think, “great, that’s sorted.” Then you find out just how important that fix actually was.

Shaan recently helped a customer who had lost access to their security system. The job involved resetting the system and moving them over to a new app, as the old app was being replaced.

As fate would have it, the system was back up and running just in time. As that very night, the property had an intruder.

Because the customer had access to their system again, they were able to retrieve the footage and provide it to police.

Stories like this are exactly why we love what we do. Sometimes getting something working again can make a real difference when it matters most.

We’re always grateful when customers come back and tell us how the systems we’ve helped with have supported them. 🧡

And because every good story needs a little Shaan moment…

He managed to restore the security system, get the customer back into the app, and help make sure the footage was there when they needed it…

Then promptly left his mouse behind on site. 😂

Security system: recovered.
Evidence: recovered.
Mouse: temporarily MIA.

And for once, Percy has managed to avoid being blamed for the missing mouse although judging by this photo, he looks pretty pleased with himself. 🐱😂

🔌 What’s actually plugged into your router?

Most of us use Wi-Fi every day, but have you ever looked at the ports on the back of your router and wondered what they actually do?

Here’s the simple version:

🌐 WAN Port
This is usually the port that connects your router to your NBN NTD, modem or internet connection. Think of it as the port that brings the internet into your router.

These are used to connect devices directly to your router with an Ethernet cable.

🏡 Building a new home? Don’t forget your internet connection!

Your builder or developer may arrange the NBN application and prepare your home for connection during construction. It’s worth checking exactly what’s included before handover.

Having the NBN equipment installed doesn’t mean your internet is active you’ll still need to choose an internet provider and arrange a plan. If the equipment hasn’t been installed yet, we can check your address and help coordinate the next steps with NBN.

💡 What about the $300 fee?
For eligible new developments, NBN applies a one-off $300 New Developments Charge, including GST, to the provider arranging the property’s first NBN service. Providers may pass this charge on to the customer, and it can apply even if the NBN equipment is already installed.

🧡 What a week it’s been at Townsville Internet!

The team has been flat out across a bit of everything this week.

📹 Camera installs, including getting our hands on the new Ubiquiti G6 Turret
🚙 Shaan and Rocco headed down south again to install security cameras for a business
📶 Jean was out helping customers get connected and setting up modems
📞 Jess was keeping the office running smoothly, booking in clients and keeping everyone organised
🛰️ Jeff and Rocco installed Starlink for a customer who had been struggling with terrible internet in their area

But the best news of the week?

🎉 Brock is back next week!

We’re very excited to have him back on deck and, of course, to hear all the stories about life with his new little arrival. 👶🧡

📹 Remember that camera on the pole? Well… it’s already proving why placement matters.

You might remember the install we shared recently, where we mounted a camera on a pole to cover a specific area of a client’s property.

The client has since contacted us to let us know how happy they are with the setup, as it has helped them capture the evidence they needed to provide to police regarding people trespassing on their property.

🚪📶 Is your router hiding in a cupboard?

We get it, routers aren’t exactly home décor. 😂

But hiding your router away can sometimes make your Wi-Fi work a lot harder than it needs to.

Wi-Fi signals have to travel through walls, furniture and other obstacles, so placing your router inside a cupboard, behind the TV or tucked away in the corner of the house can affect how well the signal reaches the rest of your home.

If your Wi-Fi is struggling, the answer isn’t always a faster internet plan.

Sometimes it could be:

📍 Better router placement
📶 Adding an access point
🔌 Hardwiring important devices
🚀 Upgrading older networking equipment

Sometimes a small change to your setup can make a big difference.

🛰️ Starlink or Fibre, which one is actually better for your home?

We get asked about Starlink a lot, and the answer is pretty simple:

Starlink can be a fantastic option when good fixed-line internet isn’t available.

For rural properties, acreage or locations with limited access to reliable fibre, Starlink can be a game changer. 🙌

But if you already have access to fibre to your property, we generally recommend looking at what can be done with that connection first.

Why?

🔌 Fibre is a physical connection into your property
🛰️ Starlink relies on satellites and shared wireless capacity
📈 Starlink speeds can vary depending on demand and available capacity in your area
🏠 Fibre gives you a strong foundation that can continue to support newer networking technology as it develops

But here’s the important part…

Sometimes the internet connection itself isn’t actually the problem.

If you have fibre but your internet feels slow in certain parts of the house, changing to Starlink may not fix it.

The problem could actually be your home network or Wi-Fi coverage.

There are plenty of ways we can improve that:

🔌 Hardwire important devices for a more stable connection
📶 Add access points to improve Wi-Fi coverage around the property
🚀 Upgrade older routers and networking hardware
🔄 Make sure your equipment is running current software and configured correctly
🏠 Design your network around the size and layout of your home

Starlink absolutely has its place and for some properties, it’s the best option available.

But if you already have fibre, don’t give up on it just because the Wi-Fi in the back bedroom is terrible. 😅

There may be a much simpler solution.

And yes, someone actually guessed it correctly. Apparently we have a few followers who have toured their fair share of pubs and have a very good memory. 😂🍻

Jeff, Rocco and Shaan were away helping with the installation of a camera system for a company in the area.

While Townsville is home, our team can travel outside the region. That means we’re able to support businesses in smaller regional towns that may not always have easy access to experienced telecommunications and security installation teams.
