When did you last hear a dial tone? ☎️

For generations, it was the first sound of every phone call. You'd pick up the handset, hear that steady hum and know you could start dialing.

It came from home phones in the hallway, phones at work and the phone box down the street. Mobiles changed all that. We type the number first and then press call, so the dial tone isn't needed anymore.

But pick up a public phone, like this red one in The Rocks, Sydney, and you'll still hear it. Calls from Telstra public phones have been free since August 2021, so the dial tone is still ready whenever you need it.

Getting help quickly is what matters most in an emergency. Here’s how your mobile phone connects to Triple Zero (000) and what to do if you’re having trouble getting through 👇

First, your phone will try to connect using your mobile network. If that's not available, it tries another mobile network. This is called emergency camp-on.

You don't need to change any settings or do anything yourself to activate this. It works automatically and for free – even without an active SIM in your phone.

If a call fails, disconnects, takes a long time to connect or gives you an error message then hang up and try again immediately.

If it still doesn’t seem to be connecting, try 000 again and stay on the line for up to 60 seconds to allow time for your phone to connect to another network. The line will generally be silent while this happens.

For anyone too young to recognise it, meet the 600 series connector. This bad boy was once the standard way to plug in a landline in Australia before the six position modular connector most homes have today took its place.

Despite what the Reddit comments might have you believe, it didn’t play cassettes. (Sorry about that)
