Hello all,
Presently you may have noticed that our website has been intermittently on and off.
This is due to our internet provider causing an issue for the last 40 days! This has now been registered with the TIO to get a resolution, now waiting for a response from both parties.

More soon,

As most people will know that Microsoft has released Windows 11, mainly as part of their next release.

How does that affect you you may ask? The first thing you may ask yourself is how old your computer. Any motherboard produced in the last 5 years will have the hardware to comply with the (in our opinion) excessively stringent!

Firstly you need to have (primarily) a TPM (Trusted Platform Module) version 2 (https://www.pcgamer.com/au/windows-11-demands-tpm-20-and-heres-what-that-means-for-you/).

How does this affect you? You may ask, the support for updates in Windows 10 end in 2025. After that time you cannot receive any updates (good or bad - depends on your perspective). which makes for an issue for end-user & business alike (unless you pay for the extended support).

Perhaps this may be the time to look into other avenues, perhaps Linux?

For the gamer's out there, the most recent releases of Steam platform supports a multitude of Windows games (https://store.steampowered.com/steamos/) the most recent version is based around the Arch distribution. Previously they had been basing the platform on Debian.

However if you are not primarily looking at gaming and your focus is mainly business platform based then perhaps look at the groupware options available. One that comes to mind is Nextcloud (https://nextcloud.com/). This allows for teams to collaborate in realtime, support to chat with video/text/etc.

We will cover more in the next post.

Kindest regards,

CPITS crew

Sorry for the delay in posting, Sarah & I have been rather snowed under.

We felt it was time to give you some advice, with many of the Windows 10 updates has essentially canned your network connectivity whether it be Wi-Fi or wired.

One method we have recently found out that works is by doing a network reset. This can be found by clicking the Start button on the task bar, click the gear icon to go to settings (or a quick way is to hold the Windows key on the keyboard and press the letter i). Click on the network tab and scroll down on the right column until you see Network Reset. Click on that link.

The system will restart in 5 minutes, this is unfortunately standard.

Once the reboot has taken place, you should be able to have access to connect to your wireless router provided you have your Passphrase on hand. Or conversely connect to your router on a wired connection.

🙂

Hello all,

Firstly our apologies for our delay in posting however we have been quite busy with work recently.

Maintenance of servers & networks can take some time to iron out minor & medium level issues which we seem to have under control presently.

Recently we have been dabbling in home security systems due to necessity, whether it is commercially available DVR CCTV systems or a DIY solution.

For the scope of this post we will be concentrating on the latter.

Essentially a commercial system is a customised computer with certain attached hardware to provide the input from CCTV cameras (for example Swann systems or Techview), these can get quite expensive depending on the amount of cameras required. There are also hybrid systems where you can use IP cameras, they either have their own power adapter or can be powered via 'Power over Ethernet (PoE). For the use of PoE you can either use an power injector or go to the expense of purchasing a PoE capable Ethernet switch, these can be quite expensive on their own.

In our case we opted to utilise a combination of in-expensive webcam's and relatively inexpensive Wireless IP camera with a 2nd hand computer we resurrected for this use. We had a number of hard disk drives (HDD's) in our backups which are more than adequate in capacity for this use, and a copy of Windows 10 at our disposal. We then searched for open-source/donationware versions of adequate software, finally finding a package called ContaCam which suited our needs.

Having installed the operating system then installing the afore mentioned software, it was simply a matter of loading the drivers for the webcams and adding to the list of cameras the software had at it's disposal. The Wireless IP camera was a little more involved to get working, we emailed the manufacturer explaining what we wished to do and they were kind enough to email a patch that enabled the functionality we required. This was greatly appreciated obviously!

We can now monitor our premises whilst at home or on the road while the software records any motion it detects.

Should you wish to discuss your interest in doing similar have no hesitation in contacting either Sarah Nicholson or myself (Trudi Morrison-Gardiner) with your requirements, please do so!

We have touched on this topic previously however how many of you have considered implementing a Network Attached Storage (nas) in your home/small business?

Whilst there are commercial devices available it is not at all difficult to build one (or have us build it for you).

There are a number of open-source/freeware platforms available which include a variety of add-on packages which compliment the installation such as a Plex media server for any movies you have paid for at the ready! Use your smart TV/phone/media player to access your content from anywhere in your house or by way of Wi-Fi access point, in your backyard!

Food for thought for those still in self-isolation.

We're only as far as a phone call away!

How many people have a decent anti-virus/anti-malware package running on your computers? Does it detect malware efficiently?

Albeit that we cannot force you to use a paid license package it really is something that you should consider.

We actually strongly recommend Bitdefender Gravityzone, it is monitored 24/7... Constantly updated to ensure that your data is safe!
