Meet Purple Fuzz (Punctularia atropurpurascens), a crust fungus that turns ordinary rotting wood into a stunning, velvety work of art. 🪵💜
Here are a few cool facts about this striking find:
💜 What's with the texture? Unlike typical cap-and-stem mushrooms, this is a "crust fungus." It grows flat against dead logs and branches, developing those beautiful, wavy, wrinkled ridges you see here.
💜 The "crying" fungus: When it's actively growing and highly moist, it undergoes a process called guttation. It exudes striking, dark amber or purplish moisture droplets across its surface, making it look like it's covered in tiny jewels.
💜 A natural recycler: It’s a saprotrophic fungus, meaning it plays a vital role in the ecosystem by breaking down dead hardwood and returning nutrients to the soil.
💜 Color shifting: When it's fresh and wet, it sports that gorgeous, deep purple-to-maroon hue. As it dries out, it fades into a more subtle, brittle brownish color.
Nature definitely didn't hold back on the color palette for this one!
