Phonegate: historic FCC ruling on SAR testing

In 1996, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) set a specific absorption rate (SAR) test distance of 15 mm from the body. In April 2025, on the quiet, the US agency took the historic step of reducing this to ≤ 5 mm for all portable devices, including phones, tablets and connected computers. This new advance represents a major step forward in our fight to better protect the public health of billions of users worldwide.

It’s mid-February, 17C and sunny in the mountains of Shanghang, a county in China’s Fujian Province, and international student Albert is packing his suitcase to return to Australia. He’s one semester away from graduating from Adelaide University with a Masters in computer innovation.

As one of 200 international students in the course, he’ll be charged $100,000 for the privilege of his ­Australian education. His two years of study will be paid for by his single mother, the owner of a successful makeup ­business in China, where her son, 24, earned his undergraduate engineering degree.

Canadian RF-EMF Declaration – 2026
Scientists and medical experts call for the updating of Health Canada’s recommended limits for human exposure to electromagnetic fields in the frequency range of 3 kHz to 300 GHz set in Safety Code 6 (2015) which include the limits for 5G technologies
WHEREAS:

Levels of radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF) are increasing rapidly in Canada,1,2 and ubiquitous exposures are a public health concern, particularly with regard to children and the medically vulnerable;

Health Canada sets recommended limits for human exposure to RF-EMF emissions from wireless devices and equipment such as cellphones, smart meters, cell tower antennas, Wi-Fi and 5G technologies in a document called Safety Code 6 (2015)3,4 for radiofrequency fields in the range of 3 kHz to 300 GHz;5,6

Safety Code 6 (2015) limits, similar to those of the USA’s Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP), do not adequately protect human health because they are based on flawed assumptions;

These assumptions have been shown to be invalid by the International Commission on Biological Effects of Electromagnetic Fields (ICBE-EMF);7

In 2011, based largely on human studies, the World Health Organization-International Agency for Research on Cancer (WHO-IARC) classified RF-EMF as a Group 2B possible human carcinogen;8

Subsequently, the WHO-International EMF Project commissioned 12 systematic reviews on 10 health outcomes;

When there is adequate scientific evidence, well-conducted systematic reviews are the preferred method to examine evidence of effects of hazardous agents on health in the scientific and medical literature;

In 2025, the ICBE-EMF9 published that the WHO-commissioned systematic reviews on cancer and reproductive toxicity provided “sufficient information for public health agencies to reevaluate current exposure guidelines and promote risk-reducing recommendations.”;10

ICBE-EMF also stated that the WHO-commissioned studies did not review the scientific evidence on the biological effects of: heating, genotoxicity, non-laboratory mammals nor non-mammalian species;

Furthermore, the WHO-commissioned reviews cannot be relied on as proof of safety because of serious methodological flaws.10

We, scientists and medical experts engaged in studying the health and safety of radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF), call on the Government of Canada to:

Acknowledge risks to human health of RF-EMF (a hazardous agent) at levels below today’s recommended limits in Health Canada’s Safety Code 6 (2015), including the limits for 5G technologies;*

Update Health Canada’s RF-EMF limits based on precautionary, health‑protective interpretation of findings and recommendations of an independent panel to be convened by Health Canada. The panel must have appropriate expertise to review systematically the scientific evidence of the biological effects and risks due to RF-EMF exposures;**

Urgently develop a robust public awareness program to advise Canadians to minimize exposures to RF-EMF and to choose technologies that connect non-wirelessly, especially for children and the medically vulnerable.

This includes all radiofrequency limits set by Health Canada including the 2021 “Complement to Safety Code 6 (2015)”: Notice: Localized human exposure limits for radiofrequency fields in the range of 6 GHz to 300 GHz.

** This includes human and non-human species, applying rigorous scientific methods, transparency, and full public consultation throughout the process.

Should we expose kids recovering from leukaemia to carcinogens?

A charity has launched virtual reality programs with hospitals in Queensland that encourages children recovering from leukaemia to use virtual reality headsets that make them feel as if they’re in a different location.

A new Australian study shows that over 26 million adults are likely to experience health problems from exposure to wireless radiation in three countries alone. That includes one in six Australians – over 4.5 million.

The study, by Dr Julie McCredden, Lyn McLean, and Professor Anne Steinemann, has just been published in the journal Next Research.
