Sometimes the most valuable part of a website isn't what people notice.

It's the things they don't notice.

โœ”๏ธ A useful navigation
โœ”๏ธ Pages that load quickly
โœ”๏ธ Buttons exactly where you'd expect them
โœ”๏ธ Words that answer your questions before you even think to ask them

Good web design isn't about showing off.

It's about making life easier for the people visiting your website.

If a website feels simple to use, that's not an accident. It's the result of hundreds of tiny decisions working together behind the scenes.

That's the kind of website I love creating.

A quick heads-up. ๐Ÿ‘‹

Today, I discovered that someone is impersonating me and Looking Glass Creative by sending fraudulent emails.

The email offers a "website review" and asks recipients to reply "yes". It was not sent by me.

If you receive an email that looks like it's from me, please take a moment to check the sender's email address before replying or clicking on anything. If you're ever unsure, contact me directly using the details on my website.

A few reminders:
โ€ข I will only email you from my official Looking Glass Creative email address
โ€ข If something feels a bit off, trust your instincts and check with me first

I've reported the account and have contacted my clients directly.

It's a good reminder that scammers are becoming more convincing, so a healthy dose of scepticism goes a long way.

Thank you to everyone who has reached out and helped spread the word โค๏ธ

I never set out to be a web designer.

The truth is, I left school without much of a plan other than to have fun! (I did!) I then fell into a job in insurance, and I may as well have been walking around naked each day. I did โ€‹NOT belong, though I was ok at it. I was being trained to become an underwriter and thought, what the hell am I doing? And I quit.

โ€‹Before I left, one of the men there looked down his nose at me and said, 'You know, you could be earning $100-150k' (which is a lot now and was a fortune 20 years ago).
I said 'Yeah. โ€‹But are you happy?'

Reader, he wasn't.

From there, I decided to pursue my passion. I loved books and reading, so publishing became my dream. I remember thinking I blew my interview at my first publishing house by making a joke. Thankfully, they laughed at the joke.

I was the proudest materials co-ordinator you've ever met. I learned a lot. โ€‹How to do things. How a business works. Watched people. Who did I want to be like? Who was a great manager and why? Something I've done at all my jobs. While there, people would have digital questions, and I realised I LOVED answering them. Figuring out puzzles.

I did some cool things in my publishing careerโ€‹ over 12 years, and I adored my friends and the incredible authors โ€‹I met and worked with.

But I reached a point where I had learned all I could.โ€‹ I had got a bit bored. That said, when I was head of digital marketing and was made redundant, it was a huge shock.โ€‹ Theoretically, it should have been exciting. Time to try something new. But it wasโ€‹ terrible timing.

My dad had just been told he had cancer, and that week, I had decided to help with my pain; I would throw myself into my work. It wasn't to be.

I tried going to job interviews, but I didn't love anything.

The brilliant Ashleigh Barton helped me gain the courage to start my business. It's been 7 years now, and I've now learned to lean into what I love. And that's helping people untangle the puzzle of their business and get them online in their own authentic way.

If you're staring at just that puzzle now and need help, I'm just an email away.

I was thrilled when this enquiry came through, as it was a project that sounded great, โ€‹but also this jolly little nugget. '๐˜ˆ๐˜ ๐˜ด๐˜ข๐˜ช๐˜ฅ ๐˜บ๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ ๐˜ธ๐˜ช๐˜ญ๐˜ญ ๐˜ฃ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ฃ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด๐˜ต ๐˜ง๐˜ช๐˜ต.โ€‹'

Maybe you're sick to your guts of hearing about AI. I get it. Me too. AI, le sigh.

But if you're a business with a website and hearing all these acronyms, AIO โ€‹GEO thrown around and stressing out about being found on AI, I promise you it's not as scary as it sounds.

It's just good SEO.

1. Keyword research
What do people search on Google, and what are they asking AI?
From there, choose the right words and terms for your business

2. Technical optimisation
This is making sure your website follows best SEO practices. Can a person read it? Can Google's bots and AIโ€‹ understand what it's about?

3. Backlinks (if you're a Drag Race Fan, I always read this the same way Alyssa Edwards says โ€‹'๐˜‰๐˜ข๐˜ค๐˜ฌ ๐˜ณ๐˜ฐ๐˜ญ๐˜ญ๐˜ด?!')
This means getting high-quality links from other websites to link back to yours. Google see this and goes It helps build your authority.

Remember, whatever you're making, make it for people first, and you're onto a winner.

If you need any help with your website, I'd be honoured to help you.

Before you hire a web designer, do these 3 things first:

โœ“ Get clear on what you want your website to do
โœ“ Gather examples of websites you love (and make a note about what it is you love about them)
โœ“ Write down the questions your clients/customers ask you most often

You don't need to have every detail figured out before starting a website project, but spending a little time on these three things can save time, money, and a lot of second-guessing.

It helps you communicate your vision and gives your designer valuable insight.

The most successful website projects aren't the ones with the biggest budgets; they're usually the ones that start with clarity.

What would you add to the list?

Before I started Looking Glass Creative in 2019, I spent more than 12 years working in publishing.

During that time, I learned a lot. But there's one thing I carry with me into every website I build.

Good design isn't about making something look pretty.

Good design helps people find what they're looking for.

It helps people connect.

Whether someone is picking up a book or visiting a website, the experience should feel clear, intuitive and welcoming.

That's why I spend so much time thinking about structure, navigation and strategy before I even start designing.

A beautiful website is lovely.

A beautiful website that makes life easier for your visitors is even better.

That's the kind of website I love creating.

Thereโ€™s a lot that goes into building a website behind the scenes.

Strategy. Structure. Navigation. SEO. And a ton of tiny details most people never see.

But this is what itโ€™s really about.
This is why I love my job.

This beautiful review from The Royal Humane Society of NSW means so much to me because it reflects exactly how I hope clients feel when we work together.

โœ”๏ธ Calm
โœ”๏ธ Collaborative
โœ”๏ธ Having fun

Before this redesign, the website no longer reflected the author behind it.

The original site had been created around the release of Kim E. Anderson AMโ€™s debut novel and had served its purpose well for many years โ€” but over time, the bright colours and bold styling started to feel visually overwhelming and disconnected from where Kim is today in her career.

So, we redesigned it.

The goal wasnโ€™t to reinvent everything. It was to create a cleaner, more elegant, and timeless online presence that better reflected Kimโ€™s work, achievements, and voice as an author.

We introduced:
โ€ข More intentional white space
โ€ข Improved typography
โ€ข Updated SEO foundations
โ€ข Better mobile experience
โ€ข Beautiful new photography throughout the site

The result? Increased user engagement, more pageviews, and a website that finally feels aligned with Kimโ€™s incredible career today.

Sometimes a redesign isnโ€™t about starting over.

Itโ€™s about creating a website that finally feels like you.
