: the first recorded complaint about technology making us stupid is 2,400 years old. It survived because someone used the technology to write it down.

In Plato's Phaedrus, Socrates tells the story of the Egyptian god Theuth, who presents writing to King Thamus as a gift that will make people wiser and improve their memory.

Thamus refuses it.

Writing, he warns, will do the opposite. People will rely on external marks instead of knowledge within themselves. They will acquire the appearance of wisdom without the reality. Instead they will be able to recite much while understanding little.

Swap "writing" for "AI" and you have this morning's op-ed pages.

Here's the detail most retellings miss. Theuth calls writing a pharmakon for memory - a Greek word that means both remedy and poison. Same word. Same tool. The Greeks understood that the technology doesn't decide which one it is. The user does.

Used uncritically, writing was exactly what Thamus feared: borrowed authority, unexamined. Used well, it built every library, every law report, every classic that today's critics accuse the machines of killing.

AI is the same pharmakon. It will be a substitute for thought for people who want a substitute for thought. It will extend thinking for people who use it to think.

And the irony Thamus never saw coming: his objection reached us only because Plato wrote it down. The most durable criticism of a technology in human history was preserved, transmitted and tested by the very technology it criticised.

The tools change. The choice doesn't.
