YOUR INDUSTRIAL DATA EXISTS. CAN THE RIGHT SYSTEMS ACCESS IT?

Industrial operations generate data across the plant, from field devices and PLCs through to SCADA, MES and higher-level systems.

The challenge is often not generating more data.

It is accessing the data that already exists, exposing it in a usable form and making it available to the systems that need it.

This becomes more complex when a plant includes equipment from different manufacturers, multiple communication protocols and systems introduced at different stages of its operation.

Softing provides industrial communication technologies for connecting equipment, networks and higher-level systems, including solutions based on OPC UA and MQTT.

Depending on the application, this can help connect PLC and machine data with systems such as SCADA, MES, analytics platforms and other higher-level applications.

For brownfield environments, the right connectivity approach may also allow existing equipment to remain in operation while providing a practical pathway towards improved data access.

At Ti2, we begin by looking at the complete application:
• What equipment and networks are already in place?
• Which systems need access to the data?
• How frequently does that information need to be transferred?
• Which protocols and interfaces must be supported?
• How will the proposed solution fit within the existing OT and IT architecture?

The objective is not simply to connect more devices.

It is to make the right industrial information available to the right systems in a practical, reliable and supportable way.

Ti2 has been a trusted Softing distributor for Australia and New Zealand since 2000, combining access to Softing technology with local industrial automation and networking expertise.

Is valuable plant data sitting inside systems that were never designed to communicate easily with each other?

Selecting control technology for a mining application involves more than specifying a controller.

For plant engineers, the decision needs to account for the operating environment, control requirements, existing infrastructure and how the solution will integrate with the wider automation system.

Temperature, dust, vibration and other site conditions can influence equipment selection. So can communication requirements, maintenance considerations and the need to interface with existing control systems.

Control architecture matters as much as the controller itself.

BERGHOF Automation offers a range of industrial control technologies, including compact and modular controllers, safety controllers, industrial PCs, display controllers and I/O systems.

Its CODESYS-based controllers use a development environment that supports programming in accordance with IEC 61131-3. For engineers, this provides another platform to evaluate when considering programming requirements, supported interfaces and integration with existing automation infrastructure.

The relevant question is not simply which controller to select, but whether the proposed solution meets the application's requirements and can be integrated and maintained within the existing plant environment.

For mining applications, product selection must also account for the specific operating conditions and any environmental, hazardous-area or functional-safety requirements that apply.

Through its technology partnership with BERGHOF Automation, Ti2 can help engineers and system integrators assess available control technology against their application and integration requirements.

PLC-TO-SQL DATA INTEGRATION IN FOOD & BEVERAGE MANUFACTURING

Millions of records. Multiple PLC platforms. One SQL integration challenge.

A globally leading food and beverage company needed to connect its Rockwell ControlLogix and Siemens PLCs to SQL Server across multiple production sites.

The company wanted to improve maintenance processes, resource planning and operational automation using IoT applications.

The technical requirements included:
• Using SQL Server as the central data repository
• Connecting ControlLogix and Siemens PLCs to SQL Server
• Managing SQL Server downtime
• Transferring data efficiently without overloading the PLCs
• Avoiding the need to buffer data in the PLCs
• Delivering data in XML format
• Integrating with Rockwell FactoryTalk

THE SOLUTION: SOFTING’S tMANAGER
Softing’s tManager was selected to connect the Rockwell and Siemens PLCs with SQL Server. The collected data was then made available to several IoT applications.
The initial rollout covered three production sites, with one SQL Server per site and approximately 35 PLCs connected per tManager.

According to Softing, tManager sends approximately four to five million records per week, supports XML data and empties its buffer within five to six seconds.

The solution is also capable of handling SQL Server downtime.

For the Rockwell systems, tManager’s backplane integration removed the need to operate a Windows-based industrial PC or similar intermediary.

The result was secure and robust communication between the PLCs and SQL Server, supporting the performance of the wider end-to-end solution.

THANK YOU, MELBOURNE! 👋

It was great to be at the IICA Melbourne Technology Expo today and to meet so many engineers, project leads, automation specialists and technical teams.

We hope you had a chance to meet the Ti2 team — and talk with us about what you’re working on.

For us, these conversations are never just about which technology to use.
They’re about understanding the application, the engineering challenge and what the project needs to achieve.

That might be a new automation project, an existing system that needs to evolve, a complex integration challenge — or something completely new being developed in R&D, innovation or advanced manufacturing.

That’s where agility matters.

At Ti2, we work across technologies and applications, adapting our approach to the requirements of the project rather than trying to make the project fit a particular technology.

You may have met Mikael Sandell, our Head of Technical Business Development, at the expo.

With an engineering background spanning machine automation, PLC programming, fieldbus communications, instrumentation and control systems, Mikael brings together technical understanding and commercial insight to help customers work through the right approach for their application.

Understand the requirement → identify the right technology → engineer the solution.

Because sometimes the best engineering answer isn’t the most obvious one. And sometimes the requirements change along the way.

That’s where an agile engineering partner can make a difference.

If you didn’t get a chance to speak with the Ti2 team at the expo, the conversation doesn’t have to end there.

Have an automation project, integration challenge or application you’re working through? Talk to the Ti2 team about what you need to achieve.

Ti2 engineers Mehdi Shayestehfar and Ryan Stapleton recently completed a motion-control integration using a Zaber E-MCC2 controller, EtherCAT, CODESYS Control for Linux SL and CODESYS SoftMotion.

EtherCAT communication was operational, the drive could be enabled and standard SoftMotion positioning was functioning correctly.

The challenge appeared during homing.

When MC_Home was called, the generic CiA 402 SoftMotion driver did not complete the required transition from CSP mode to the Zaber drive’s internal Homing mode.

Mehdi and Ryan developed a custom Zaber-specific SoftMotion driver to resolve the issue while preserving the standard CODESYS PLCopen interface and SoftMotion functionality.

The solution manages the required CiA 402 sequence, monitors homing status, synchronises the SoftMotion command position with the drive position after homing, and returns control to SoftMotion.

The result is a standard CODESYS MC_Home command successfully performing drive-controlled limit-switch homing on the Zaber E-MCC2, while retaining SoftMotion functionality.

MEET THE TEAM | Mehdi Shayestehfar

Meet Mehdi Shayestehfar, Head of Engineering at Ti2 Group.

Mehdi’s work sits firmly at the practical end of engineering, spanning industrial automation, control systems and R&D, with a focus on turning engineering concepts into solutions that work in the real world.

With a background in manufacturing and industrial environments, Mehdi understands that engineering doesn’t stop when a system is commissioned.

A solution needs to be reliable on the factory floor, practical during commissioning, straightforward to maintain and fit for purpose over the long term.

That lifecycle perspective shapes the way Mehdi approaches engineering at Ti2.

He also brings a vendor-agnostic approach, focusing first on the application and technical requirements rather than allowing a particular hardware brand or proprietary ecosystem to dictate the architecture.

At Ti2, this means working with open technologies, open-source frameworks and vendor-agnostic solutions to build systems that clients can own, understand and control.

The role of AI is also becoming increasingly important. Mehdi sees AI not as a replacement for engineering experience, but as a way to make experienced engineers more effective — helping with documentation, troubleshooting, analysis and the heavy lifting that can otherwise consume valuable engineering time.

For Mehdi, the objective is straightforward:
Keep engineering practical. Avoid unnecessary complexity. Build systems that are stable, useful and maintainable.

We’ll be sharing more from Mehdi and introducing other members of the Ti2 team over the coming weeks.

You can meet Mehdi and the Ti2 team at the IICA Melbourne Technology Expo this September and talk with the crew about:
• Industrial automation and control systems
• PLC integration
• R&D and specialised engineering
• Instrumentation
• Vendor-agnostic architectures
• Open technologies in industrial environments
• Manufacturing and process improvement
• Commissioning and maintainability

Or bring along a technical challenge your team is currently working through. We’re always interested in a good engineering conversation.

Ti2 | Open Automation. Real Engineering.

What does open automation look like in operation?

The IICA Sydney Technology Expo gave Ti2 the opportunity to showcase exactly that, both at our exhibition stand and through our participation in the CODESYS Corner.

And, quite simply, we loved it.

CODESYS is a technology we are genuinely passionate about because it challenges the traditional idea that control software and hardware must come from the same manufacturer.

Engineers can work within a common IEC 61131-3 engineering environment while selecting hardware that best suits the application.

This provides greater flexibility across controller performance, I/O, communications, industrial computing, availability and system architecture, rather than designing around a single hardware vendor.

At the CODESYS Corner, Ti2 demonstrated this through live hardware and applications, including high-speed digital I/O, real-time logic, SoftPLC, CODESYS WebVisu and multi-vendor integration.

But open automation is about more than technology. It is about having the freedom to engineer the right solution for the application.

Ti2 works with a broad network of technology partners, including Festo and Softing, alongside ARBOR Technology, Berghof Automation, CMZ, Elastel, ELGENS, Helmholz, Janz Tec, MPL and ODOT Automation.

Together, these partnerships provide access to complementary technologies across industrial control, pneumatics, remote I/O, industrial computing, networking, communications and diagnostics.

We can begin with the engineering challenge, understand the requirements and select the technologies that make the most sense.

Not tied to one hardware platform. Not constrained by one vendor. Just practical engineering focused on the right outcome.

Thank you to everyone who visited the Ti2 stand and CODESYS Corner in Sydney. The technical conversations, questions and enthusiasm for open automation were fantastic.

We look forward to continuing the conversation at the IICA Melbourne Technology Expo 2026.

Our Melbourne stand will feature CODESYS technology and demonstrations, alongside a selection of our technology partners, showing how these technologies work together in practical industrial automation applications.

Come and talk to the Ti2 team about CODESYS, open automation, control systems and system integration, and see what’s possible when you have the freedom to choose the right technology for the job.
