Poster Boy: Becoming Zyzz.
For this project, we were brought on board to develop the titles, motion graphics and visual language for the documentary.
With so much of Zyzz’s persona playing out online, we looked back to the early 2000s internet; a pre-social, pre-algorithm world of forums, message boards, MySpace, Facebook and self-made online identities.
We wanted to capture that world without just recreating it. A custom typeface was developed to anchor an imagined online space where Zyzz and the crew could connect. Referencing the raw, chaotic visual language of early internet culture, we distilled it into a contemporary, legible environment for the documentary.
As the film progresses, so does the graphic language. The playful, energetic world of the early internet gradually becomes heavier and more fractured as Zyzz’s trip to Thailand approaches.
The work was a constantly evolving and challenging process, developed closely with the director, editor and producer as the film itself took shape.
Featured in this carousel are some of the final pieces that appear in the documentary, alongside WIPs, concept work and discarded ideas from the process. We thought it was worth sharing some of the things that didn’t make it in, too.
