Trohet R's made by John .

This is certainly an advanced finish to try and apply. Green olive wash on oak.

The trick is to apply the finish without leaving streaks or drips.

After a long discussion and then later testing on scraps, we found the only way was to spray it. End result looks very professional. Nice job John!

External crossover boxes aren’t for everyone, but if you’re the type who cares about squeezing every last bit of performance out of a system, this is where magic happens.

The Trohet R crossover is… big. Much bigger than you’d expect for a compact bookshelf. That size is all doing real work. Large air-core inductors, high-voltage film caps.

Then there’s the time-alignment network. That section takes up about a quarter of the board on its own. It keeps the woofer and tweeter in lockstep so the music feels cohesive and effortless. Plenty of detail, but it still has warmth and weight. Everything just sounds more “right.”

You can read all the words in the world, but the moment you hear it, you get it.

Rob’s Trohet R build.

Built in solid mahogany and fully lined with mass loaded vinyl. This dramatically reduces cabinet resonance, especially in the upper bass and low mid range.

He also chose to run external crossover boxes. Smart move.

By keeping the crossovers outside the speaker, two things happen.

First, you gain more internal volume. More volume means a lower tuning frequency, which means deeper bass. Simple as that.

Second, the crossover components are not sitting inside a cabinet shaking like crazy. Inductors really do not love vibration, so removing all that mechanical stress lowers distortion and improves resolution.

A thoughtful build that squeezes every drop of performance out of the Trohet R.

Today friends and I listened to the Trohet R fitted with the new 4th Generation crossover system, and now mounted externally.

This revision brings some meaningful changes. The crossover point has been lowered and the baffle compensation network refined. The result is a fuller more continuous transition from bass into the midrange. Vocals gain presence. Instruments gain realism. The speaker feels more connected to the music.

The new crossover architecture is physically large. When it sits inside the cabinet it consumes valuable internal volume and that limits low frequency performance. By placing it externally the woofer can access the full enclosure volume and the extension in the bass becomes immediately noticeable.

It also removes the crossover from the highest stress point inside the design. Less vibration less mechanical energy acting on the components and less distortion introduced into the signal. Cleaner detail and a more controlled sound.

This is the kind of incremental improvement that makes a real difference in the experience. Small elements of engineering that stack together to shape how a speaker ultimately feels.

Also thank you for the incredibly comfortable listening chair. So much cushioning it practically functions as acoustic treatment.

Built by hand.

Chris Kelly’s Trohet R build is a masterclass in craftsmanship – American walnut veneer, lead-lined panels, CNC precision, and a finish that speaks for itself.

This is what it looks like when you build something that sounds as good as it looks.

Sanding is one of the most satisfying parts of a speaker build. There’s something about taking a rough surface and transforming it into something silky smooth that just feels good. Plus, it’s the key to getting an incredible finish when oiling or varnishing your speakers.

The trick is knowing when to stop. For most hardwood cabinets, 240 grit is the sweet spot. Sand too rough, and the finish can soak in unevenly. Go too fine, and the wood won’t absorb the oil properly, leaving it looking flat. At 240, you get that perfect balance—smooth to the touch while still allowing the finish to bring out the depth and character of the grain.

Sanding with the grain helps avoid visible scratches, and if you’re using an orbital sander, a quick hand-sand at the end makes sure everything feels uniform. It’s a small step that makes a huge difference in the final result. And let’s be real—sanding is just fun. Watching the wood transform, feeling that perfect surface come together, and knowing the finish will look incredible? Hard to beat.
