I've worked through market crashes from the inside.
This week Daily Telegraph asked me what Australians should do before the next one.

I was one of six experts in Rachel Wastell's piece on recession-proofing your finances, and I'm so grateful to have been asked.

Cash buffers, rate rises, and whether to sell your shares or property. Swipe through for what I told them.

After 25 years in banking, from Lehman Brothers to Barclays, the lesson I keep coming back to is simple. The boring things you do now matter more than any prediction.

Know someone who's been doom-scrolling the rate news? Send this their way 🤍

This line was up for review. The government decided to leave it where it is.

So the wealth tests for private investments still use the same numbers they did 25 years ago, while house prices and incomes have kept climbing. That means more people are likely over the line now than when it was drawn.

It's worth knowing both sides: what it can open up, and the protections you give up when you step over it.

Comment PRIVATEMARKETS and I'll walk you through how the tests work.

Most people I sit across from think this world is closed to them. It isn't.

This industry is already worth trillions, and it's not staying put. Where it's headed by the end of the decade genuinely surprised me, twenty-five years into this.

The real question was never how much money you have. It's what you've actually been shown.

Comment 'PRIVATEMARKETS' and I'll walk you through where you sit.

The real issue is almost never how much people earn. It's the order they pay things in.

Flip that order and you don't need willpower. You need one standing transfer that happens before you see the money.

Start with whatever you can. The habit matters more than the number.

Save for the next time payday hits.

Twenty-five years in finance taught me plenty about money. It taught me more about everything else.

None of what's coming up has a dollar figure attached. All of it still paid off.

Swipe through. You'll probably recognise a few of these.

Money conversations don't happen in most Australian homes. So silence becomes the default position.

I wasn't taught any of this either. Growing up, money wasn't something anyone explained to me. What changed things wasn't just a career in finance. It was deciding, somewhere along the way, that learning this was my responsibility and no one else's.
Here's what I've noticed since, watching wealthy families operate. The ones who build wealth that lasts don't necessarily talk more about money. They talk more honestly about it.

Not the numbers. The beliefs underneath the numbers. What's safe. What's risky. What's even worth considering beyond the house.

Because kids don't just inherit assets. They inherit whatever gets left unsaid at the dinner table. And if the only message they ever hear is property is the only safe place for money, that becomes their ceiling too. Not because it's true. Because it's the only thing they've heard.

I see this play out with founders and investors all the time. The ones who build wealth beyond property either grew up watching someone talk about money without fear, or they had to make it their own responsibility to learn it, later in life.

Save this for the next time money comes up at home, and notice what actually gets said.

It's Year 11 and 12 subject selection season, and every conversation I hear is about marks and pathways.

Which matters. But it got me thinking about the thing nobody sits our kids down to explain.

After more than two decades across banking, law and private markets, I've watched the same pattern repeat.

Most wealthy people don't build wealth from their job alone.

They learn a valuable skill. They work for someone else long enough to understand how it's done. They build or buy a business. They create value through ownership. Then they put the proceeds to work in assets.

Your career generates income.

Your investments build wealth.

Two different skills. We only teach one of them.

So while the right subjects matter, I'd like to see financial literacy, entrepreneurship and investing given the same weight at the kitchen table.

Maybe the better question isn't "what do you want to study?"

It's "what life do you want to build?"

Ask your teenager that one this week. The answer might surprise you both.
