Just a few other things the āIā in AI could stand for. š¤·āāļø
I tend to bury my head when it comes to sharing personal opinions online, but something happened this week that made me think it was probably time I shared mine on AI.
I know itās not going anywhere, and Iām not anti-technology. Iām a digital illustrator after all.
But tools change, industries evolve and we need to evolve with them.
There are parts of AI I genuinely love. Anything that makes the boring admin side of running my business quicker gets a big tick from me.
But using generative AI to completely replace human creativity, or feeding someone elseās creative work into it?
Thatās where you lose me.
Creativity isnāt just knowing how to make something look good. It comes from experience, curiosity, judgement, mistakes, weird ideas, gut instinct and all the other stuff we pick up simply by being human.
AI has access to an enormous amount of information. But it hasnāt lived a life. It can remix what it knows, but it doesnāt have its own story, instincts or point of view.
This week, I saw designs I created being fed into AI to generate new content. š³
Honestly, it broke my little designer heart. And yep, the results felt like a bit of a gut punch.
But more importantly, I didnāt give permission for my work to be used that way.
Putting your work online isnāt an invitation for someone to feed it into AI. And paying a creative to make something for you doesnāt automatically give you permission to upload their work and generate your own versions of it.
Somewhere in the rush to make everything faster, cheaper and easier, I think weāre forgetting the value of the actual human behind the work.
The ideas. The experience. The weirdness. The point of view⦠That stuff matters and itās worth protecting.
