Why some power leads have a notch in the socket

Ever noticed that some IEC power connectors have a small notch cut into the inlet? That's a C15/C16 high-temperature rated connector, designed to handle equipment that runs significantly hotter than standard office gear. You'll find these on professional audio amplifiers, some server PSUs, and electric kettles. The notch prevents you from accidentally plugging in a standard C13 lead that isn't rated for the heat. While they look almost identical, using the wrong lead on hot-running equipment can melt the connector. Access stocks both C13 and C15 variants, because the last thing anyone needs is a melted plug in a live rack.

From brass terminals to modern data jacks.

The wall plate has come a long way from the brass terminal blocks of early telephone installations. In the 1970s, you'd physically wrap wires around screw terminals. The 1980s brought us the modular RJ socket. The 1990s introduced CAT5 keystones. Today's wall plates are sophisticated modular systems that accept data, voice, HDMI, USB, and even power in a single flush-mount frame. This evolution mirrors the explosion of connectivity in our lives. Access stocks the complete modern range: blank plates, loaded frames, and every keystone insert type you need to terminate a professional installation that will serve for decades.

The RJ11 lead that's hiding in plain sight.

While the world has moved to mobile phones and VoIP, the traditional RJ11 telephone lead is still everywhere. It's powering EFTPOS terminals at the checkout, connecting fax machines in medical centres, linking alarm diallers in security systems, and providing the backup line for critical infrastructure. This humble 4-wire connector just keeps working, decade after decade. Access maintains deep stock of quality RJ11 leads, couplers, and wall plates because we know that the 'old tech' is often the most reliable tech. When the internet goes down, that copper phone line is still your lifeline.

Keep the dust out of your data centre lungs.

World Asthma Day reminds us that air quality matters, and nowhere is this more true than in a server room. Dust is the silent killer of electronics, clogging fans, insulating heat sinks, and creating static discharge paths. A properly sealed rack with filtered ventilation acts like a clean room for your expensive hardware. Access stocks cabinet fans, vented panels and blanking panels that keep the air moving and the heat out of your valuable hardware.Treat your rack like a set of lungs: keep the air clean, the filters fresh, and the cooling effective.

The tiny fastener holding the entire industry together

In a world of high-speed switches and expensive servers, the humble cage nut rarely gets the respect it deserves. This square nut slots into the vertical rails of your 19-inch rack and provides the threaded anchor point for every piece of equipment you mount.

Without quality cage nuts, your expensive gear would have nothing to bolt to. Cheap cage nuts strip easily, break under tension, or refuse to grip properly.

Access stocks professional-grade cage nuts and the correct insertion tool, because even the smallest component deserves to be reliable when you're building a rack that has to last.

Why your cable choice depends on where it's going.

Solid or stranded copper? The answer depends entirely on the application.
Solid core uses a single thick conductor per wire, designed for permanent installations inside walls and ceilings. Stiffer, harder to terminate, but better signal integrity over distance.

Stranded uses multiple thin conductors twisted together, making it flexible and perfect for patch leads that get moved regularly.

The catch? Never use stranded for permanent runs, or solid for patch leads. Access stocks both types clearly labelled, all pure copper, so you always grab the right one for the job.

Today is World Book Day. We wrote ours online.

UNESCO chose April 23 for World Book Day because it marks the death of both William Shakespeare and Miguel de Cervantes, two of history's greatest writers, on the very same date in 1616. Quite a day for literature to lose.

In Catalonia, Spain, the tradition goes even further. On April 23, people exchange books and roses. Four million books are sold there on this single day every year.

We may not deal in novels, but we've quietly built our own library. From cable shielding guides to UPS buying guides, termination tutorials to AWG calculators, the Access technical resource library has been helping installers make better decisions for years. No dust jacket required.

That little rubber snag-saver explained.

You've probably noticed that some patch leads have a small rubber boot covering the clip of the RJ45 connector. This isn't just cosmetic. It serves two important functions. This isn't just cosmetic. It serves two important functions. First, it protects the delicate locking tab from snapping off when you're pulling cables through tight spaces or dense patch fields. Second, it provides strain relief right where the cable enters the plug body, reducing the risk of the conductors breaking from repeat flexing.

Every Access Datamaster patch lead comes booted as standard. Essential for high-density installations where you're constantly plugging and unplugging. That little boot can add years to the life of your patch lead.

Stop water from travelling along your cable.

Water doesn't need a gap to get inside. It just needs your cable. Even a perfectly sealed entry point can fail when water wicks along the outside of the cable jacket and rides it straight through the wall. Tradies call it the siphon effect and it kills outdoor installs quietly, long after the job is done.

The fix is simple. Create a drip loop: sag the cable below the entry point so water runs off before it ever reaches the pe*******on. Then back it up with gel-filled outdoor cable that blocks moisture from travelling through the core itself.

Access stocks gel-filled outdoor data cable for exactly these conditions. Australian spec, ready to go.
