🚨 The Internet Is Actually Broken Right Now. Most Australians Just Haven't Noticed.

FACT: Over the past two months, multiple major submarine internet cables connecting Australia to Asia have been damaged. Engineers have successfully rerouted traffic to keep services online, but it's a fascinating reminder of how dependent modern Australia is on infrastructure that most people never think about.

You may have heard a lot recently about new "data centres" being built across Australia. There's been plenty of debate about electricity consumption, AI, water usage and investment.

But before discussing whether we need more data centres, it's worth understanding what they actually are and why they matter...

Because the cable failures currently affecting international internet traffic are the perfect real-world example.

So what actually is a data centre?

The simple answer is:

👉 A data centre is just a giant building full of computers.

Those computers store and run the services we use every day:

✅ Facebook
✅ Netflix
✅ Microsoft 365
✅ Teams
✅ OneDrive
✅ Banking apps
✅ Online shopping
✅ Business software
✅ AI platforms like ChatGPT

Most people don't realise just how much of modern life depends on these facilities.

So why does Australia need data centres?

Imagine every time you opened Facebook or watched YouTube, your data had to travel all the way to America and back.

It would work, but it would be slower.

That's why companies like Microsoft, Google, Amazon and others build data centres here in Australia. They put the services physically closer to us.

Instead of:
Australia - USA - Australia
we can often do:
Adelaide - Sydney - Adelaide
Which is much faster. This is why services like Microsoft 365 generally feel very responsive in Australia.

The Internet Isn't Floating Around In The Air

Most people picture the internet as satellites, Wi-Fi and mobile towers.

The reality is much less exciting.

Most of the world's internet moves through fibre optic cables laid on the ocean floor.

Thousands of kilometres of cable connect Australia with:

Singapore
Japan
Indonesia
Europe
North America

Without those cables, Australia becomes a very isolated island digitally.

And Right Now, Several Of Those Cables Are In Trouble

Over the past couple of months, multiple major submarine cable faults have occurred affecting the routes that normally connect Australia with Asia.

These aren't SIMTEL faults, NBN faults, or customer faults.

They're faults affecting some of the critical international infrastructure that carries internet traffic between countries.

Engineers are currently working around the clock to reroute traffic and repair damaged sections of cable.

Unfortunately, repairing a cable that is sitting on the seabed hundreds or thousands of kilometres away isn't a quick job.

Specialist ships are required to:

Locate the fault
Recover the cable
Repair or replace damaged sections
Re-test the link
Return it to service
So Why Is My Internet Still Working?

Because the internet was designed to survive problems like this.

Think of it like a road network.

If a major highway closes, traffic is sent along different roads.

You'll still arrive at your destination, but the trip may take longer.

That's exactly what's happening with some international internet traffic right now.

What Might You Notice?

Many Australian services remain completely normal because the data is already hosted in Australia.

However, some overseas-hosted services may feel a little slower.

You might notice:

• Cloud management portals loading slowly
• Overseas websites taking longer to open
• Delays connecting to some online services
• Slightly increased lag when interacting with overseas systems

For most people, streaming Netflix and browsing Facebook will continue to work normally because much of that content is already cached within Australia.

Why This Matters

This situation is a great reminder of why Australian data centres and local hosting are so important.

Every service that can be hosted locally:

Reduces dependence on international links
Improves performance
Improves resilience
Keeps services running even when international infrastructure has problems

The more we host in Australia, the less we're affected when something goes wrong thousands of kilometres away under the ocean.

The Bottom Line

The internet isn't magic.

It's a huge network of computers, data centres, fibre optic cables and engineers working together to keep the world connected.

Right now, parts of the international network connecting Australia to Asia are operating around significant cable faults. Thanks to redundant routes and alternate paths, most services are continuing to operate, but some international destinations may be slower than usual.

It's a fascinating reminder that when you open an app on your phone, there's a good chance your data is travelling through data centres, fibre networks and submarine cables stretching across entire oceans before it arrives.

And most of us never even think about it.

Everyone's talking about the Starlink price rise like it's the problem. It's not. 🔵

The real issue? Most people don't actually know if NBN is the right move for them — and nobody's bothering to help them work it out.

That's what I'm here for.

I'm Casey — I run SIMTEL, a small South Australian internet provider. I've been in this industry long enough to tell you honestly: Starlink is genuinely impressive tech. If you're truly remote with no fixed-line NBN, stay on it.

But if NBN is available at your address? The price rise is a good moment to pause and ask whether you're getting the best value — and whether you're actually being supported.

DM me the word HELP and I'll personally check what's available at your address. Free. No pressure. No sales pitch.
