We had 12 residents attend, covering practical topics including:

It was a highly engaging session with plenty of questions during the Q&A, followed by some great one-on-one conversations afterwards โ€” and of course, coffee and cake to wrap things up.

A big thank you to Megan Lia and the team at Oak Tree Retirement Village - Victoria Point for the opportunity, and to all the residents who took the time to attend. I genuinely hope everyone walked away with a bit more confidence and practical knowledge.

These sessions will continue across other retirement villages each month, and I look forward to returning to Oak Tree again soon with a new topic.

The Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) recently shared an important reminder about legacy technology and the risks it can pose.

Legacy technology refers to systems or software that no longer receive updates or support from the vendor. While older technology may still appear to work fine, it can quietly become a serious security risk over time.

Without regular security updates, these systems can contain known vulnerabilities that cyber criminals actively target.

In todayโ€™s environment where online scams, fraud, and cyber attacks are becoming more common, outdated technology can make businesses and individuals far more vulnerable.

This is why itโ€™s so important to regularly review and maintain your technology.
At a bare minimum, systems should be running:

โ€ข Windows 11 with the latest security updates installed
โ€ข A reputable antivirus or endpoint security subscription that is actively maintained

Good cyber hygiene is just as important. Some simple but effective practices include:

โ€ข Use strong, unique passwords for every service
โ€ข Use a password manager (password safe) so you donโ€™t need to remember them all
