There's an issue with HP workstations and the latest October Windows 10 update. It may cause WDF_VIOLATION blue screens or startup recovery boot loops. Concerned about the media hyped 'WannaCry' virus outbreak? I've noticed a number of companies using this opportunistic time to sell antivirus subscriptions, some even claiming that a user is unprotected and is at risk of an upcoming outbreak that will happen today if they don't subscribe. This is just a scare tactic - as long as 1. You have all of the latest windows updates (which since windows 10, you can't actually disable), 2. Don't open any email attachments you weren't expecting - most of the time they come in the form of AGL bills or Australia Post invoices, but .zip instead of .pdf etc, and 3. Don't click any funny links you aren't expecting or didn't ask for - then you should be fine!

I did post about a similar virus called CryptoLocker which does the exact same thing - encrypts your files and asks for a ransom - the only difference is the WannaCry virus got the media's attention. Windows 10 has built in antivirus, and if you're concerned, contact me about setting up Malwarebytes which runs safely alongside it - I should note here that I personally haven't used 3rd party Antivirus or Antimalware on my own machines in years - as long as you don't click the wrong thing, or download files you don't know the true origin of (piracy/torrents included) you won't be at risk.

Don't forget to upgrade to Windows 10 for Free before it's one year anniversary on the 29th of July! This is a massive improvement over the previous operating systems and is available for anyone running Windows 7, 8 or 8.1. Just a warning: There is a relatively new breed of virus which has been circulating over the last few weeks which goes by a few different names, one of which I recently had to assist with, known as Crypt0l0cker. The virus encrypts all files except a select few required to run windows and your programs, but locks all databases (including your emails if stored locally) and asks for a ransom of up to 2 bitcoins (currently, 1 bitcoin is worth over AUD$750) to provide you a file which will 'decrypt' the data, however reports are that only around 50% of people who pay the ransom have a successful decryption process, plus all you are doing is letting them win.

A company in Russia has the ability to create a decryption tool of their own on a case by case basis for the majority of these. I personally find it very odd that one company in the whole world seems to be able to crack something as secure as an RSA key without access to the maker... but they definitely work out cheaper at closer to AUD$200.

Ways to stay protected:

DON'T OPEN EMAIL ATTACHMENTS; Unless you know who they are from and are of a file format you understand. The recent case i dealt with had an email from AGL containing an 'invoice' which was a .zip file, while a normal bill would have been sent as a PDF.

DON'T DOWNLOAD ANYTHING; Unless you know the website is definitely the one you're intending on downloading from, is trusted and you have verified it's URL (https://....).

The best thing to defend against this virus without financial loss is keep a CURRENT OFFLINE BACKUP - offline meaning disconnected from the machine except when backing up. This virus has the ability to go in and encrypt your backup files as well as any other attached drives.

To anyone who has read through this - I hope this helps you avoid a very serious infection which can be detrimental to your personal accounts, files, photos, and business documents.

The latest threat: Malware that installs a Bitcoin miner on your computer, which consumes your video card's processing power to calculate hashes earning the Malware creator Bitcoins, a digital crypto currency. If you find you are receiving a lot of errors regarding graphics driver crashing, it is possible your machine is infected. Thankfully, the solution is quick and painless. Contact me ASAP if you are noticing slow gaming performance and/or your screen flashing black for a second or two - as you may be infected.
