Personal Security is Everyday Security

The security of your personal accounts and devices is vital. The Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) is urging all Australians to secure their accounts and devices to prevent cybercriminals from accessing and stealing your personal information.

Your devices, including your phone and tablet, contain lots of personal information. They often have access to your personal accounts, making them rich targets for cybercriminals.

What are the risks?

The ease of mobile phones makes them both convenient and attractive targets for cybercriminals. You should treat your phone like your wallet.

If your phone is lost, or compromised, your personal information could be at risk. Your social media, email accounts and banking information could be accessed to steal your money or identity.

Good security on your phone and accounts will help keep your personal and financial data safe.

How should I practice personal security?

Keeping your phone and other devices safe with good security practices is important. Some free and simple steps you can take include:

• Locking all your devices, using a secure passphrase, pin or biometric (e.g. Face ID).
• Treating your phone like a wallet. Keep it secure by knowing where it is at all times.
• Keeping your devices updated. Turn on automatic updates, to regularly update your phone.
• Using secure and reputable apps. Ensure they come from the official app store. Remove apps you no longer require, or that ask for permission to access cameras and microphones where it is not required.
• Being cautious when using public Wi-Fi. Your activity may be visible to others. Avoid banking, shopping, sending emails, entering passwords or credit card details into websites while on public networks. Instead, switch to a mobile data connection.

The unfortunate truth of owning and running a small business.
Running a business is really hard.
What they don’t tell you is that it can cause severe stress and anxiety, and drains you mentally to the point of depression in even the most laid back people.
People will talk about you, compare you to others, use you, they will view you as a service and not a person anymore.
Friends and family will expect discounts and people will value you and your hard work less than they do a big chain store. The big stores wont let you leave without paying first but for some reason it's not acceptable for some of us to ask for payment up front.
You have to worry about if you forget to email/message someone back, are they going to think it was on purpose? Did you disappoint them? Will they hold that against you? When in reality you just can’t get to everyone’s messages and emails as quick as they might like.
Starting up and running a successful business puts incredible strain on personal lives and relationships, many of which fail because there is just often no work life balance. You need to be the director, the worker, the admin, the marketing team, the accountant, the cleaner..... All whilst being a parent, a husband or a wife, family support, friend... it’s one of the hardest things you will try and balance There’s a reason you don’t see many people succeed in small businesses after 5 years. If they are successful they are overwhelmed. It takes a toll. It’s freaking exhausting. Especially the past couple of years when so much has been out of our control.
Here’s a small reminder that we are just normal people with hectic lives. Be kind, be patient, support small businesses…….and hopefully more of us will stick around!

Please be vigilant when communicating by email, particularly when discussing bank account details or invoicing.
Mitigation strategies include:
• Verify payment-related requests: If you receive a request to make a large transfer or to change bank account details, you should verify that the request is legitimate before actioning it. Call the sender's established phone number or visit them face-to-face before transferring any funds.
• Secure your email account: It is recommended that construction companies and related businesses use strong passphrases and enable multi-factor authentication on their email accounts.
• Training and awareness: Ensure that your staff are trained to recognise suspicious emails, including fraudulent bank account changes or requests to check or confirm login details. The latter may be a phishing attack which could compromise account security.
