The Australian Government has finalised the successful bids for Capacity Investment Scheme Tender 8 – NEM Dispatchable, with 15 standalone battery projects selected across the NEM.

Together, the successful projects will provide 4.2 GW / 16.1 GWh of dispatchable capacity.

The tender received 73 bids totalling 76.4 GWh, reflecting strong participation from battery storage developers across the NEM.

AEMO has released the final 2026 Integrated System Plan (ISP). ⚡

One of the key updates is the increased outlook for dispatchable storage (utility-scale + co-ordinated CER storage).

The final ISP now projects 64 GW of dispatchable storage by 2050, up from 55 GW in the draft 2026 ISP and 49 GW in the 2024 ISP.

The updated forecast reinforces the growing role of batteries in supporting reliability as electricity demand increases and more renewable generation enters the NEM. The ISP also continues to identify renewable energy, supported by transmission, storage and flexible gas, as the least-cost pathway for the energy transition.

South Australia's first long-duration FERM tender was a clean sweep for batteries, despite gas being eligible.

So what will be the role of gas in the energy transition?

Gas generation has been on a downward trend for many years now in the National Electricity Market. But Energy Synapse Managing Director Marija Petkovic says gas won't disappear completely.

As the deployment of renewable energy grows, storage will get us through the usual daily supply/demand balancing. Where gas will be useful is during more extreme events, for example, prolonged wind lulls in the winter.

Gas will have a small (in terms of annual GWh), but important role as backup generation.

FERM Tender 1 results are out!

RWE's 50 MW / 400 MWh Limondale Battery Energy Storage System in NSW has received approval to commence full operations.

The project is notable as Australia's first operational eight-hour battery, marking an important milestone for long-duration storage in the NEM.

CIS Tender 9 – NEM Generation is now open for bid submissions.

This tender is seeking an indicative target of 5 GW of renewable energy generation across the NEM, with registrations closing on 6 July and bids due on 20 July.

NSW projects are ineligible for this tender due to previous CIS allocation outcomes, while solar-only projects in Victoria will be limited to 0.47 GW.

As developers prepare bids, understanding revenue performance and outcomes under different market scenarios will remain an important part of assessing project competitiveness.

Capacity Investment Scheme (CIS) Tender 7 results are now out!

The Australian Government has selected 19 projects under CIS Tender 7 – NEM Generation, supporting a combined 7.8 GW of renewable generation capacity across the NEM, well above the original 5 GW target. Eight of the successful projects were hybrids, adding 7.9 GWh of storage capacity.

The round was also heavily oversubscribed, receiving 53 bids representing 18.6 GW of proposed capacity.
