It’s been a busy 6 weeks since the launch of Old School Guitar Amps. Thanks HEAPS to the many customers who’ve trusted us with their pride & joy.
From vintage early 70’s Fenders, to nineties & noughties Marshalls and the ever-present Fender Hot Rod Deluxe/Devilles, we’ve had plenty to do.
Here’s a few pics and details of one of the amps we’ve had on the bench lately…
Jon’s Fender Blues Deluxe Reissue had an intermittent, ugly distortion happening on both channels. It had been to a couple of techs over the years, and been completely retubed, but the problem persisted… intermittently.
We discovered the problem was induced by vibration… it didn’t happen at low volumes, and it didn’t happen at any volume when the back panel was fitted…. which made the cause REALLY difficult to find.
After a LOT of troubleshooting, we identified one of the two channel-switching relays was the culprit. Even though channel switching was working fine, vibration was causing the relay’s contacts to oscillate open/closed, making the amp sound terrible.
We fitted a couple of new relays, and the amp was as good as new… better even, because while we were in there we fixed a bunch of other known issues common to the Blues & Hot Rod series Fender amps: Things like low-voltage power supply resistors mounted too close to the PCB and causing heat-damage; brittle solder joints at ribbon-connectors, plate-load resistors that are under-rated for the voltages they see, and poor-quality filter capacitors that are known to fail.
If you’ve got a Fender Hot Rod or Blues Deluxe or Deville that needs some love, Old School Guitar Amps can help.
Drop us a line via Messenger or email and we’ll be in touch ASAP, we promise!
