We complete IT audits across medical and dental clinics in Perth regularly. After a while the patterns become very easy to spot.
These are some of the things we see in almost every first audit.
Backups that have never actually been tested.
The job runs every night and shows green, but nobody has ever restored from it to confirm it works. In healthcare that is a real risk.
Ghost Microsoft 365 accounts.
Staff who left months or even years ago still have active licences. The practice continues paying for them every month without realising.
End of life hardware still running clinical systems.
Windows 10 machines close to retirement, ageing servers and PCs that take several minutes to open practice software. It slows staff down every single day.
Phone systems with no clear ownership.
IT handles computers. Someone else handles phones. When something breaks that involves both, nobody moves quickly.
Security that looks right on the surface but has gaps underneath.
MFA might be enabled and antivirus running, but things like conditional access, backup monitoring and proper incident response are missing or untested.
Internet connections with no failover.
One line into the building. If it drops, the entire clinic stops. A simple 4G backup solves this and is surprisingly uncommon.
None of these issues are unusual. Most are straightforward to fix once someone actually takes the time to look properly.
If you run a medical or dental practice and would like a clear picture of where things stand, we are always happy to take a look.
