We're seeing a massive uptick of compromised Bigpond mail accounts in the last couple of months.

The attacker generally sends a spoofed email asking you to sign in, steals your credentials then monitors your inbox for invoices to do the old switcheroo. This costs you money and causes heartache. They specifically target vulnerable members of our society such as retirees that are "a bit scared of change".

If you're still using ISP mail, now's a really good time to get off that sinking ship. Literally anything else would be better (though Outlook or Gmail are going to be your best bet, something that supports modern security protocols).

IMAP was invented in 1986. POP was invented in 1984. These are legacy protocols that really shouldn't be used for much of anything in 2025.

And in a move that absolutely nobody is surprised about, iiNet are finally canning personal email accounts.
You can opt in to transfer to a new mail provider and they'll shout you for up to a year. No indication of costs after that though.

New iiNet email addresses are no longer available as of 6 June 2023.

My "lovely" mother-in-law Dawn had her Facebook account breached yesterday by some wa**er in Nigeria. She managed to regain access to her account again, but then was immediately kicked out as the sneaky bastard had added their own email address to the password reset system. They then started spamming out scammy messages to phish for data - this is identity theft 101.

Luckily, we were on site to help sort this mess. Immediately invoked 2-factor authentication to keep the nasties out and locked everything down.

Email/SMS password reset IS NOT STRONG ENOUGH to protect your accounts and your information. You MUST use app-based 2FA. I'm not f*cking around when I say this. Go and set it up now. You should have 2FA on EVERYTHING you log in to online.

If your business email is hosted by iiNet or Westnet, you’ll likely have received an email from them over the last few days notifying you of the cancellation of their email hosting services effective 30th April 2023.

An important part of their email:

“From 30 April 2023, your Hosted Email Service will no longer be operational. You will no longer be able to access or retrieve any email data or use the Hosted Email Service in any way.

We recommend that you act now to ensure you retain your email data associated with your Hosted Email Service.”

They’ve provided a ‘helpful article’ so you can do this yourself – or if you don’t have the time or energy, email migration and hosting are some Jorgensen IT Service’s main services so feel free to reach out.

‼️ TL;DR: iiNet and Westnet will be deleting any remaining Hosted Exchange mailboxes on 30th April 2023. This is permanent and irreversible, so act now to save your data! ‼️
