🔒 Are VPNs actually worth the money — or is it clever marketing?

A mate asked me three questions: Do they work? Are they worth paying for? And why are the prices so different?

This video breaks down what VPNs actually do, when they're useful, how free and paid options differ, and the privacy catch that VPN ads often gloss over.

✅ VPNs can mask your public IP address
✅ They encrypt traffic between you and the VPN provider
❌ They don't make you invisible or stop every scam
⚠️ You're also placing trust in the VPN company. HTTPS already encrypts most modern websites.

A NAS is NOT a backup. Here's why. ⚠️

A home NAS is brilliant for sharing and storing files. Mirrored drives can protect against one drive failing, but they don't automatically protect you from accidental deletion, ransomware, theft or fire.

For important files, keep a separate backup — ideally with a copy off-site.

Why does Windows 11 keep pushing a Microsoft account? 🤔

It can make syncing settings, OneDrive and Microsoft services easier — but not everyone wants to use a cloud-connected sign-in for their PC.

Before changing account types, make sure your important files are backed up and you know your recovery options.

What do you prefer: a Microsoft account or a local Windows account?

💻 Who's connected to your Windows shared folders?

There's a built-in Windows tool most people never open — and it's brilliant for troubleshooting file sharing on a home or office network.

✅ Press Win + R
✅ Enter fsmgmt.msc
✅ Check Shares, Sessions and Open Files

See which folders your PC shares, active connections to those shares, and which files are being accessed over the network.

⚠️ This isn't a list of everyone on your Wi-Fi. It shows network sharing activity on the PC you're managing.

Ping showing a long IPv6 address instead of IPv4 in Windows?

You don’t need to disable IPv6.

Just use:

ping -4 google.com

The -4 switch tells Windows to use IPv4 for that ping.
