Part 1 - Using AI to Research Your School Assignment

1. Understanding the Research Process
Before we begin out research for information, we first need to understand what is the research process.

The research process is a systematic and structured approach to finding and gathering information, analysing the information and extracting the relevant information and validating that the information is accurate and factual. The fundamental steps of the research process are as follows -

a. Identify the Research Question or Problem
Begin by defining the specific problem or research question related to your assignment. What is specific topic or issue are you researching? It has to be relevant and focused on the particular area of interest.

b. Conduct a Literature Review
Once you have defined your research question or problem, you will to read existing research and literature relevant to your topic. Academic journals, books, websites, newspapers, and encyclopedias are valuable sources of information. A literature review provides context and helps you identify gaps in your knowledge and the areas where further research is needed. A literature review also provides a theoretical framework for your study.

c. Define the Research Objectives
Use the assignment topic, the research question, and your literature review to define specific research objectives for your assignment. These research objectives will provide you with a guide for your research investigation and what you aim to achieve through your research.

d. Design a Research Plan and Methodology
Develop a research plan for collecting and analysing the information. The research plan should outline the information collection method to be use, sample size of the information to be gather, and the analysis techniques to be use. AI tools can assist in this phase.

e. Collect and Analyse the Researched Information
Gather and document the information from your literature search. For more advanced and complex assignments, you can prepare questionnaires and conduct surveys and interviews with people in the know as part of your information gathering methods. For example, if your assignment is to write about people war time experience, you could speak with veterans and older citizens about their experience during WWII.

AI can help in streamlining your information analysis, saving you time, and ensuring accuracy.

f. Interpret Findings and Draw Conclusions
After gathering and analysing your information, you will then need to assess validity of that information, and draw meaningful conclusions. It is particularly important to double check the information that is returned by AI as AI does not always return accurate or factual information. Do not assume that AI generated information is always correct and factual.

g. Communicating the Results
Present your findings in a formally formatted research report or presentation, that adhere to academic standards. Your report should cover the research question, literature review, methodology, data analysis, findings, and conclusions.

In Part 2, we will look into how we can AI in our research process. See you soon.

Using AI to Research Your School Assignment

Students often struggle with researching reliable information and ideas for an assignment. Since the release of ChatGPT in November 2022, artificial intelligence (AI) has revolutionized the way to approach academic research.

AI is a valuable tool for research and information gathering. It can also be used to brainstorm ideas for an assignment and even create an outline on how an assignment should be written up and presented for assessment.

However, AI should never be used to generate the assignment itself and will be considered cheating and resulting in loss of marks or no marks being given. It could also result in students being suspended or expelled from school.

In this series of posts, we will explore how students can leverage AI for their research and writing their school assignments.

We will explore the following topics -

1. Understanding the research process
• How to identify the research question or problem
• How conduct a literature review for the assignment
• How to define the research objectives
• How to come up with a meaningful research plan
• Collecting and analysing the researched information
• Interpreting the findings and drawing conclusions
• Communicating the results

2. How to Leverage AI for research
• Conducting literature search using AI
• How to brainstorming ideas using AI
• How to ask the right questions to get the best results
• How structure and write the assignment

3. Ethical use of AI in school education

So, stay tune and follow our posts as we explore the use of AI for researching and writing school assignments.

PART 2: AI Chatbots - Writing Assignments

Using AI chatbots to assist with writing school assignments can be a valuable tool, but it must be used thoughtfully. AI responses may not always be accurate and that AI generated assignments may be considered plagiarism and result in getting a failed grade. Here are some considerations for using AI to write assignments.

1. Understand your school or NSW Department of Education’s policies on the use of AI for writing assignments and follow those policies. Be aware that AI-generated assignments may contain inaccurate information and that it can be detected as AI-generated.

2. Use AI to gather relevant Information for your assignments. Provide the AI chatbot with the necessary details such as
a) Topic: Clearly state the subject of your assignment.
b) Required word count: Specify the desired length of your assignment in word counts.
c) Style or context of Essay: Is the assignment to be a discussion piece, a personal reflection, formal writing or funny and witty etc.
d) List all the key points of the assignment: Share any specific viewpoints, facts, or arguments you want to include.

3. Use the AI chatbot for brainstorming and inspiration. While AI chatbots is capable of generating an entire assignment, that AI-generated assignment must not be submitted as your own work for assessment. Instead use AI chatbots to provide guidance and ideas for an assignment by giving a suggested assignment outline, subject matters, and example for inspiration.

4. It is essential to cross check the references and facts of AI-generated content for accuracy and verification. Do an independently Internet search for additional information and verification purposes. Microsoft Copilot will provide a list of references whereas ChatGPT does not and will need to be prompted to provide those reference sources. In either case, all references sources should be verified as true references and that the AI chatbot has used information from those reference accurately and factually and not misinterpret the information to create incorrect responses.

5. AI chatbots can be used for checking spelling, grammar, sentence structure and coherence. It can also be used to ensure that an assignment follows academic standards and a logical flow to make it easier reading and understanding.

AI chatbots can be powerful educational aid, but they cannot replace human judgement and critical thinking. Use AI chatbots wisely, and responsibly and ensure that your final submitted assignment is truly your own work.

PART 1: AI Chatbots - What are they?

AI chatbots are powered by AI technology and are designed to have a human-like conversations with people. They can engage in conversations, answer questions, and assist users in a conversational manner.

There are currently number of chatbots that are free to use. These are Microsoft Copilot, Google Gemini and, Perplexity.ai and OpenAI ChatGPT 3.5. Chatbots that requires a paid subscription to use includes OpenAI ChatGPT 4.0, Jasper and ChatSonic. Many of these paid subscription chatbots are built on using OpenAI ChatGPT technology. The vendors of these chatbots claims to provide a better targeted chatbot than that just using OpenAI ChatGPT directly. These claims may or may not be true.

Of the free chatbots, Microsoft Copilot is freely available from its MS Edge browser and uses OpenAI ChatGPT 4.0 technology free of charge. Whereas OpenAI will provide ChatGPT 4.0 through it ChatGPT Plus offering as a paid subscription service.
We do not recommend any of the paid subscription chatbots as there is really no additional benefits to be gain from these chatbots when use for educational purposes. We also do not recommend OpenAI free ChatGPT 3.5. Both OpenAI ChatGPT 3.5 and 4.0 are unable to access or provide information that was created after January 2022.

We do highly recommend Microsoft Copilot due to it being readily available, uses the ChatGPT 4.0 technology for free and is able to access current information from the Internet including current news and events.

Google Gemini is also highly recommended as it is free to use and can access current information. It is however built on a different technology and can offer an alternative perspective in its answers to that by Microsoft Copilot.
