Unfortunately outback travel in Australia comes with a multitude of risk… going prepared with the bare minimum emergency equipment can be lifesaving and save a lot of time for rescuers. Basic equipment should include a registered Personal Locating Beacon (or Sat Phone, Sat Messaging Device), remote first aid kit (with snake bite bandages), recovery gear (and the knowledge of how to use it), fire extinguisher and enough food/water to last a couple of days if you get stranded.
The PLB is vital to be activated at the point at which you believe you are now experiencing a life or death situation… the worst that can happen is someone comes looking for you and find that your broken down but ok… always let someone know your plans and travel routes and then have a check-in date(s)/time(s) and who to contact if you don’t check in.

A statement from Carolina Wilga.

"First and foremost, I want to express a huge thank you from the bottom of my heart – a thank you that truly comes from the depth of my soul! For all the incredible supports during the search for me.

"Previously, I didn’t know where my place was in a culture on the other side of the world to my own, but now, I feel a part of it. I am deeply impressed by the courage, helpfulness, and warmth that has been shown to me here. Western Australia has taught me what it really means to be part of a true community. Here, humanity, solidarity, and care for one another are what truly matter – and in the end, that’s what counts most.

"I am certain that I survived only thanks to this incredible outpouring of support. The thought of all the people who believed in me, searched for me, and kept hoping for me gave me the strength to carry on during my darkest moments. For this, I want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart.

"Especially to the police investigators, searchers, the German Consulate, the medical staff and the wonderful nurses who took care of me with so much compassion. My deepest thanks also go to every single person who simply thought of me – and of course, to my rescuer and angel, Tania!

"Some people might wonder why I even left my car, even though I had water, food, and clothing there. The answer is: I lost control of the car and rolled down a slope. In the crash, I hit my head significantly. As a result of the accident, I left my car in a state of confusion and got lost.

"I am simply beyond grateful to have survived.
Thank you Australia – you are amazing."

A man in his 30s is recovering after his heart stopped and was restarted by strangers in Kalbarri at the weekend.

The man went into cardiac arrest at Natures Window on Sunday morning and several travellers who were present immediately began CPR.

Joanne Marks, who took turns doing compressions on the man, says one of the group members ran to retrieve a defibrillator machine, or AED, that was installed at the car park.

The man was given two shocks, which she believes were crucial to saving his life.

“Within five to ten minutes we had the defibrillator on scene,” Ms Marks said.

“At the end of the day, we absolutely could not have revived him, I'm fairly sure, without the AED on site.”

St John Community Paramedic Nick Chadbourne said the man would have died within minutes without the quick actions of travellers and the AED, which he and other St John personnel spearheaded the installation of 10 years ago.

“We came up with this idea of putting them in a safe with a code with instructions on the front to ring triple zero if you needed to access it,” Mr Chadbourne said.

“The one at Natures Window was [one of] the originals.”

“Now we have over 2000 of these accessible AEDs across the state.”

A flood warning is issued to parts of the Pilbara this week. Check BOM Warnings if you are out camping / 4wding!! Stay safe!

Rainfall in excess of 100mm could be seen in some parts of the East Pilbara today due to a weekend forecast of unseasonal weather.

A flood advice warning has been issued for parts of the Kimberley and Pilbara in the Tanami Desert Catchment.

Bureau of Meteorology duty forecaster Joe Rawson says there is a large cloud band stretching across the region today and tomorrow.

"Places like Marble Bar as well as Telfer and even Port Hedland are expected to get some decent falls... the rain that we're looking out there is around 30 or 50 millimetres, but we're not ruling out some odd 70 millimetre type falls," he said.

"It's not a concern for the rivers, it's just kind of out of the blue type rainfall."

"[There's] a slight chance of getting some 100 plus type falls."

Strong wind warnings have also been issued for the Pilbara, Gascoyne and Geraldton coastlines today.
