Most businesses have a backup. Far fewer have ever actually tested whether it works.

The test is straightforward: can you restore your data, in a reasonable timeframe, in a way that gets your business back to normal? Not in theory. In practice, with someone walking through the actual steps.

Staff leave. Contractors finish. Their access often doesn't.

Choosing an IT provider is one of those decisions that's easy to get wrong and hard to see the full cost of until you're already locked in.

The things that matter most, how quickly someone actually answers when your staff call, whether issues get resolved or just closed, whether the provider thinks proactively about your environment or just reacts to problems, these things don't show up clearly in a proposal document.

The best way to evaluate an IT provider is to ask specific questions about how they work, rather than accepting general assurances. Ask what proactive monitoring looks like in practice. Ask what happens when something goes wrong after hours.

Ask for examples of issues they identified and resolved before a client was even aware of them.

When a vulnerability gets patched, the fix goes out. So does the documentation explaining exactly what the flaw was.

Businesses still running the unpatched version have a known weakness. Attackers scan for those systems and the window can close in days.

Cyber insurance is a sensible thing for a business to have. It's worth knowing what it does and doesn't cover.

Most policies provide financial support for recovery after an incident. What they don't cover is the full cost of a serious breach: the client relationships affected, the reputational impact, and the operational disruption that can continue long after the immediate incident is resolved.

Insurers are also increasingly requiring evidence of basic security controls before paying claims. Multi-factor authentication. Current patching. Tested backups.

The most effective phishing attacks on Tasmanian businesses don't involve anything technically sophisticated.

A staff member gets an email that looks like it's from a supplier they've worked with for years. Banking details have changed, it says. Please use the new account. The invoice is real. The work was done. Only the account number is wrong.

Any change to payment details should be confirmed by a phone call to a known number, not a reply to the email. Two minutes. Stops this completely.
