Most organisations end up with their technology split across people who never speak to each other. One company does the network. Another does the AV. A web agency does the site. A separate developer does the back end.

Then something stops working between them, and nobody owns it.

OPOC Solutions builds websites and digital experiences as well as AV and ICT infrastructure. Design and development, interface and user experience, content management, performance, and ongoing support once it’s live.

Same principle as everything else: one company responsible for how the whole thing works together.

Every integrator has had the day where a critical part doesn't arrive, and the client's handover is tomorrow.

What happens next has very little to do with the supply chain. It has everything to do with whether the person on the other end of that phone wants to help you.

Orville's view after thirty years in the industry is blunt: suppliers are not a cost line. They're the reason a deadline gets saved.

The businesses that treat suppliers as interchangeable find that out the hard way, usually at the worst possible moment.

Plenty of good technology work in Australia is done by one person operating on their own. Skilled, reliable, often cheaper.

The question worth asking isn’t whether they’re good at the job. It’s what happens to your building when they’re not available.

They get sick during your install week. They take a bigger job and yours slides. They go on holiday the month your system plays up. They retire, and the only person who understood how your rooms were wired retires with them.

That’s not a criticism of anyone. It’s just what happens when everything depends on one diary.

If a technology project has cost you more than it should have, it’s worth understanding why before you run the next one.

Not to assign blame. Most of the time the contractors involved all did their bit properly — there just wasn’t one person holding the whole thing together.

Orville has spent thirty years on these projects and has seen most of the ways they come unstuck. He’s happy to have the conversation whether or not it leads anywhere.

If you’ve got one you’re still annoyed about, or one coming up you’d rather get right, pick up the phone.

When a technology project blows its budget, people usually blame the equipment. It’s almost never the equipment.

It’s the electrician who finished before anyone confirmed where the screen was going, so the power is in the wrong spot. It’s the joinery built to the wrong depth. It’s the day lost because two contractors each thought the other was running the cable. It’s the programmer flying back a second time for something that took twenty minutes.

None of it shows up on the original quote. All of it shows up on the final bill.

The gear is the predictable part. It’s the gaps between everyone that cost the money.

Most people who’ve run a fitout have one project they’d rather not talk about.

It started with a reasonable quote. Then came the variation. Then the delay while someone worked out whose job the cabling was. Then the second visit, because the first one couldn’t be finished. By the end, the number looked nothing like the one that got approved.

Nobody did anything wrong, exactly. It just slowly got away from everyone.

The frustrating part is that it’s usually predictable. The same handful of things go wrong on technology projects, over and over, and most of them get decided long before anyone picks up a tool.

The AV and ICT industry in Australia is smaller than it looks.

The supplier squeezed on payment terms on one project is the same supplier being asked for a favour on the next one. The rep pushed around in a negotiation talks to other reps. Reputation travels faster than any marketing does.

OPOC Solutions has been working with the same supply partners for years, which is why unusual problems tend to get unusual solutions — the kind that require someone to go and check whether a thing is even possible.

You don't get that from a transactional relationship.

When an integrator says yes to a project they can't deliver properly, the person who wears it is the client.

They get the system that technically meets the spec and practically doesn't work. They get the handover with no documentation. They get the support arrangement that evaporates once the invoice clears.

Declining a project isn't a business being precious. It's a business refusing to sell an outcome it can't stand behind for the next ten years.

OPOC Solutions stays involved long after installation, which is exactly why what gets taken on matters.

After thirty years, the projects that go wrong tend to announce themselves early.

The scope that's still changing after the contract is signed. The decision that needs four people who've never been in the same room. The site access that's "being sorted." The brief written around a price rather than an outcome. The client who's already been through two integrators and hasn't said why.

None of these are automatically fatal. All of them need to be named out loud before anyone commits.

OPOC Solutions asks those questions during the assessment, not during the install.

Turning down work feels counterintuitive. It's also one of the more useful things a technology partner can do for a client.

Some projects arrive with a scope nobody can define, a budget that was set before anyone looked at the building, and a timeline that assumes three trades can occupy the same ceiling space on the same afternoon.

Taking that project on doesn't help the client. It just moves the failure six months down the track, with a contract attached to it.

OPOC Solutions would rather have the difficult conversation at the start than the very difficult one at handover.
