Julia Reader Creates

Julia Reader Creates Artist, graphic designer and pattern creator living in the Limestone Coast of South Australia. Hi, I’m Julia – a self-taught artist and graphic designer.

I have a deep fascination with nature and it is here that I draw the greatest inspiration for my work. I love working with watercolour and am developing a fondness for acrylic too. I love to teach watercolour and have hosted many classes, and my aim is to give as many people as possible a way to explore their creativity. The popularity of these classes (which always astounds me) tells me that peop

le are seeking new and meaningful ways to spend their time. I live in the Limestone Coast of South Australia. I love to caravan around, spend time at the coast and be immersed in bushland. I am a collector of anything found in the natural world (feathers, seed pods, shells & leaves). I am also a deep thinker who prefers conversation with substance. I’m a nature-lover and have a deep respect for Mother Nature.

These shorter days draw me inward, as is the case every year. My reflective nature has me wondering where my energy should be focussed, and questioning my integrity as an artist who isn’t practicing art right now.

These cooler days ask me to slow up - to focus on home, prepare hearty meals and bake, and potter in the garden. To plant winter vegetables and stare into outside fires.

These quieter days remind me that I definitely don’t have it all figured out, and I likely never will. The stillness encourages curiosity, making possible the idea that change is the only constant, and acceptance of that is the key to living wholly.

I kid about the hats that I wear in a week. One of the hats I’ve not worn enough is the one covered in paint (and labelled as ‘artist’).

This year I’ve carved out a day in my week to just… create. Not for the expectation to sell, but to just flex the creative muscle and see where it leads.

I’m like anyone else who loses touch with creativity. Even though I know how important it is to fulfill my creative side through play, experimentation and grace, I become distanced from it through life’s other expectations of me. But if I dig deeper, it’s me that allows this and it’s only me who can navigate my way back to centre.

Today I spent a few hours making a start on a painting which I’ve fallen in and out of love with multiple times already. It’s that push and pull of the creative process that I’ve missed, where the destination unfolds with each mark I make - sometimes with an exacting perfection, and other times not.

Here’s to creative Wednesdays!

It was a surprise and a pleasure to sell this whopping painting to a lovely local couple just before Christmas last year. It now sits pride of place in their family room, exuding a bright and energetic vibe.

Watercolour in the Gardens // Sunday 22 February, 2026.

Join me for a lovely late-Summer afternoon set amongst the beautiful established gardens of Caroline Hills. Suitable for beginner and intermediate levels, this workshop will see us paint some loose florals with watercolour.

Materials, a shared grazing board, a glass of wine or mocktail, and a beautiful and inspiring setting is included in your ticket. We will also experience a short guided tour of the garden by Caroline Hills owner, Helen Strickland.

This small-group workshop, like all workshops I offer, is thoughtfully curated. Caroline Hills is a perfect location and much more than a vineyard, a farm, or a garden—it’s a lifelong project, shaped by dedication, discovery, and the rhythm of the land. To paint in this location will not only provide inspiration; it will be a sanctuary to explore our creativity and connect with like-minded people.

Limited to 10 tickets via link below 👇🏼

To round out the end of the year, I’m holding one last short-course in November/December. I only have 3 tickets available as, like it usually happens, I get a run of inquiries which essentially creates the class, and then I sell what I have left.

I feel like I rehash the same description of this short course over & over, but one thing that doesn’t change is the passion that I get when I create and promote this course. It’s all about learning to use watercolour and becoming confident, but it’s also so much more to me.

Over the last few years this course, again and again, has proven to be a safe space to explore creativity. It’s also provided an opportunity for people to learn and grow. I’ve had the absolute privilege of holding space for many people who have found their place at the table; because I definitely feel connected to a group when I see them over 4 weeks.

I rattle on about the benefits of a creative practice and how this course is food for the soul. And as I study further the field of mental health, I’m adamant that creativity and good mental health are inextricably linked.

So if you’ve got this far, thank you. This course offers 8 hours of lesson time over 4 weeks. I will fill your mind with all the knowledge I have accumulated over the years with the aim of you walking away with a new-found confidence and a, hopefully, increased appetite for all things creative. Because if you haven’t gathered yet, I’m very passionate about people coming together to learn and grow.

Come and learn watercolour with me, starting Thursday August 28 (next week). Over 4 weeks we will learn the intricacies of this beautiful medium. We meet on Thursday nights from 6:30-8:30 and cover fundamentals, colour and how to compose an artwork.

What I love most about this short course is the regular meet-ups with great people. I always walk away with a full heart because what creativity naturally does it open people up to share & receive. I often say it’s food for the soul, because it simply is.

So if you have an interest in learning, and perhaps need to carve out time just for you, then please consider joining me. Consider it a personal invitation.

Details of the course can be found via the link below. And should you have questions, please get in contact.
