Engineers at the University of Washington have unveiled the world’s smallest computer, a fully functional device the size of a grain of salt, capable of running entirely on ambient radio waves without a battery.

Unveiled in June 2025, this micro-computer harnesses ambient backscatter technology, modulating existing radio signals from cell towers, Wi-Fi routers, and broadcast stations to power and communicate, rather than generating its own signals.

Built with a novel low-energy transistor that activates at a fraction of a volt, the processor pulses briefly only when radio waves are detected, minimizing energy use akin to a flickering firefly.

Despite its minuscule size, it can sense light, temperature, movement, and transmit small data packets to nearby devices.

This breakthrough, detailed in a recent paper, opens vast possibilities for smart cities, where millions of these devices could monitor bridges, soil health, food freshness, or traffic patterns without wires or maintenance.

Potential applications also include self-sustaining weather sensors drifting in the air or clothing tracking posture and hydration in real-time, heralding the dawn of invisible computing.

While the prototype’s data transmission range is limited to a few meters and its processing power is minimal—handling basic sensor data—researchers are optimistic about scaling it, though challenges like signal reliability in dense urban environments and long-term durability remain.
