If information is ā€œthe lifeblood of an investigationā€, CCTV must be the plasma in it.

Boroondara Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) along with other community members, recently attended the Boroondara Neighbourhood Policing Forum. The event was very informative and insightful. We will be providing a full summary of the event in our next free Boroondara NHW membership monthly E-Bulletin. NHW is free to join!

The trend in our area of aggravated burglaries and vehicle thefts was presented and discussed in depth by our senior police. Pleasingly, the police indicate that the rates of these crime is trending down from the concerning March crime statistics.

It was very interesting to note, that the police also indicated that the rates of attempted/unsuccessful aggravated burglaries on locked houses was more prevalent. Hopefully a sign of more people locking their homes.

Nowadays, offenders were often being heard or disturbed from these attempts, being seen/captured on CCTV (motion sensor) or resorting to entering from doggy doors and police quickly alerted to the failed attempts.

As a result, rapid police responses from our local police and Operation Trinity police are leading to more arrest than ever. The high rate of Operation Trinity arrests in our area speak for themselves.

The valuable tool of CCTV was also re-enforced by our local police. While CCTV alone may not prevent you from being subjected to these crimes, CCTV with motion sensor may increase your awareness of an intruder, provide greater protection and increase the opportunities for Police to perform a quick arrest.

Anecdotally, we know that post offence or after the offenders have left the scene, CCTV solves 80% of all criminal offending. If it identifies the offenders and leads to an early arrest, hopefully they are locked up. This is great crime prevention crime for our area.

For all you slueths with CCTV wanting to solve and reduce crime in your area, you can help by:-

* if you see an intruder or crime happening, report it to Police 000;
* if you discover CCTV of an intruder or suspicious person, submit a Crime Stopper report for the police and upload the footage Crime Stoppers Victoria - Report Crime Information;
* register your CCTV cameras with our local police at [email protected](your name/address/email/contact number/CCTV storage time);
* join a national community safety network and register your CCTV with our trusted partner https://www.saferplaces.com.au/ļæ½
The police and Safer Places Network geo map privately owned CCTV to assist investigations and solve crime.

Police investigators often email registered owners of CCTV to request reviews of their CCTV and share footage of the culprits or suspicious behaviour.

Registered owners like being email contacted by the police for CCTV. We know more about crime happening in our immediate area, share the requests with our sleuth neighbours (WhatsApp) and don’t want a knock at our door from the police seeking CCTV.

We all enjoy helping police solve and prevent crime in our neighbourhood. There’s a little detective in all of us with CCTV šŸ‘®ā€ā™‚ļø šŸ˜€

Safer communities don’t require sacrificing your privacy.
Our response to National Media Coverage.

This week, Safer Places Network was featured in several news stories. The response has been incredible; thousands have visited our site, shared it with friends, and asked thoughtful questions.

It’s clear that community safety and crime prevention are top of mind for many Australians right now. That matters deeply to us, and that’s exactly why we built this platform.

We’ve also seen some concerns raised online, particularly around privacy and surveillance. Some of this comes from the word CCTV itself, which often sparks fear of mass surveillance or loss of personal control.

So let us address those concerns:
- The Safer Places Network does not give police live or automatic access to your camera footage.
- It’s a privacy-first registry where responsible camera owners can voluntarily opt in and be contacted only if a crime occurs nearby.
- You, the owner, are always in control of whether footage is shared or not.

We are not advocating for additional surveillance.
We are not pushing for more police powers.
And we are not creating a national live-streamed surveillance system.

We simply want to make better use of the millions of privately owned security cameras already installed across Australia, on the outside of houses, businesses, and in driveways.

Right now, when a crime is committed, police don’t have a database they can search. They don’t know who has CCTV. They spend hours, even days, door-knocking and chasing leads. That’s precious time lost.

With the Safer Places Network, police can quickly locate cameras near the crime scene and request footage from owners. That means evidence is collected faster, and criminals are caught sooner.

It’s efficient, it’s respectful, and it’s community-powered.
Thank you again to everyone who’s joined the conversation, even those raising concerns. Your voices matter and are helping shape something better.

This a perfect example of why more community registered cameras are needed. A crook who terrorised several suburban streets in Wantirna South, with the police now needing to canvas a huge geographical area looking for CCTV evidence.

Today we officially became part of the Neighbourhood Watch Victoria Inc. Community!

We are proud to announce our partnership with Safer Places Network!

Help us help police by closing the gaps with CCTV. At Neighbourhood Watch Victoria, we proudly fill the gaps where Victoria Police need community support—and one of the most important of these is making it faster and easier for police to access CCTV footage when investigating crime.

That’s why we’ve partnered with Safer Places Network (SPN) as an inaugural supporter to help build a state-wide—and eventually national—resource that saves police time, energy, and ultimately, public funds.

Find out more here with how our partnership will help support the great work that Safer Places Network are doing here: https://nhw.com.au/program/safer-places-network/
