When I was six years old I learnt that one day, billions of years from now, the sun would die. I cried. Growing up to learn that the real threat was actually our carbon heavy existence brought a different sense of existential dread. Like a lot of people I consume way too much media about the damage done to our environment, when I was 22 I couldn’t get out of bed after learning about the trapped methane in arctic ice. Because what’s the point? Why bother to have progressed so far as a species if it has only triggered our demise? And at the cost of every other living thing? To me the most valuable thing we have is our natural world, and we are facing a reality today wherein it no longer thrives.
Yes it’s heartwarming to see people come together to raise money for the cause, but our government should be prioritising environmental defence, and not relying on the money to come after the disaster. What happens next fire season? What if this is the new normal? We can’t continue in a cycle we are clearly not prepared for. We can’t continue in a political system that stagnates environmental action to further profits. The reason why everyone is so angry at Scomo is because not only will he do the bare minimum like show real compassion and provide solutions when a disaster strikes, but he is not willing to take any preventative measures to safeguard our future or use tax dollars wisely. So make this your New Years revolution, rally this Friday at the state library to fund our firies, continue to donate if you can (I’m sending profits from my shop to a First Nations fire relief), and be fuelled by anger with the knowledge that Scott is going to get an amazing pension when his gig is up, and he really doesn’t deserve it.
