When Mentorloop's Marina Sancho asked Emily Petraglia why CHEST's mentors keep coming back, the answer started with leadership. When senior leaders are visibly part of the program, not just endorsing it from a distance, members read that as a real signal: this matters, and we're behind it. 🙌🏽

The second factor is just as telling. Many of CHEST's mentors had mentors of their own earlier in their careers. They know firsthand what that relationship gave them, and mentoring becomes a way of paying it forward.

This is the fear every mentoring program coordinator has.
If the program grows, matches will feel less personal and the program will become just another member benefit instead of something people actually value. 🙁

The American College of Chest Physicians doesn't think of mentoring as a standalone program. They think of it as the entry point into something bigger. 🚀

Their formal mentoring program is still relatively new, and many of their mentees are first-time CHEST participants, often there because they secured a travel grant to attend the annual meeting.

So their program coordinators ask bigger questions:
Is mentoring the thing that hooks someone into deeper engagement?
Does a mentee go on to apply for more grants? Join a committee? Attend more events? Eventually become a mentor themselves?

They've already seen it happen. Members who got their start through a mentor have gone on to give back with their own time, talent, or resources. 🌱

For association leaders, this reframes the question. It's not just "did mentoring go well?" It's "what did mentoring make possible?" 💡

Not because they're asked to. Because they WANT to.

Emily Petraglia, Director of Volunteer Operations, says this is the number that did the heavy lifting internally: proving the program's value and justifying continued investment from leadership. 🙌

"Mentoring is great" is not a program strategy. ⚠️

Elizabeth Stigler, Senior Director of Equity & Community Impact at the American College of Chest Physicians, advises that before you build a mentoring program, you need to be ruthlessly clear on what you're actually trying to do.

Is this the primary source of mentoring for your members?
Are you connecting people across geographies?
Are you doing mentoring, coaching, or sponsorship? (Because those aren't the same thing!)

Trying to be everything at once is exactly where programs stall out. She's seen it and Mentorloop has seen it too.

The fix isn't more features or a bigger cohort. It's better internal alignment on purpose before you go anywhere near a launch plan. 💡
