Across Southeast Asia, the days and weeks before Mid-Autumn Festival bring one of the year's sharpest shifts in foot traffic. Bakeries extend hours. Hotels turn lobbies into mooncake pavilions. Department stores hand over prime floor space to pop-ups that will disappear by October.

It's a reminder that catchments aren't static. The same trade area behaves differently in festival weeks than it does in February, and the sites that win are the ones chosen with all seasonality in mind.

To our customers, partners, and friends celebrating across Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines, and beyond: wishing you a Mid-Autumn Festival of reunion, gratitude, and a very full moon.

Whether you run a restaurant, retail store, gym, or service station, it comes down to this: are you winning as many local customers as possible, and turning them into regulars?

Local Area Marketing by GapMaps helps you turn ad spend into real customer visits, not just clicks and impressions. It uses real-world movement data to help you build campaigns that reach the right local prospects, then shows you how many actually walked through your door.

Because a campaign only pays off when it fills your business and builds regulars.

Stop paying for impressions. Start driving footfall and loyal, repeat customers.

The ABS just redrew the map of Australia, and it's already showing us where the country is growing.

Ahead of the 2026 Census, the ABS has released new Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS) boundaries:
πŸ“6,631 new Mesh Blocks
πŸ“1,640 new SA1s
πŸ“98 new SA2s

Boundaries split when population and infrastructure change, so new geography is a leading indicator of growth, well before any Census data lands.

We ranked the 20 suburbs nationally that gained the most Mesh Blocks between 2021–2026, and mapped every new Mesh Block across Melbourne and Sydney. The pattern traces the growth corridors almost perfectly.

Victoria's growth corridors account for more than half the top 20, and while #1 won't surprise anyone, a few further down the list might. When the 2026 Census data begins arriving, these are the areas where the extra detail will matter most.

See which suburb topped the list, why the ABS redraws these boundaries, and the full growth corridor maps. πŸ‘‰ [https://www.gapmaps.com/australias-new-census-geography-is-already-telling-us-where-the-country-is-growing/]

β€œThe world is changing fast, and analysis paralysis is real. There is so much data available that the harder problem is no longer access, it is speed to answer and speed to decision."

Meet Sally Blandy, GapMaps General Manager of Commercial and Growth.

Her take: pair strong data with real industry knowledge and the right technology, and you can turn information into a confident decision fast, without the paralysis. It's a philosophy that shapes how we work with clients at GapMaps every day.

We're excited to announce our partnership with Directory of Major Malls / ShoppingCenters.com (DMM), further expanding the Data-as-a-Service (DaaS) offering available through GapMaps for the retail property sector.

Through this partnership, GapMaps clients can now access comprehensive shopping center and retail property data in the USA and Canada, providing detailed insights into shopping center performance, tenancy composition and retail catchments.

When combined with our demographics, POI and visitation datasets, organisations can build a richer understanding of retail markets to support:

πŸ“ Site selection and network planning
πŸ“ Shopping center benchmarking
πŸ“ Leasing and tenant mix analysis
πŸ“ Catchment and market analysis
πŸ“ Retail investment and portfolio strategy

This partnership is another step in our vision of bringing together best-in-class location intelligence datasets into a single Data-as-a-Service ecosystem, enabling organisations to make more informed, data-driven decisions.

πŸ“Š Mark your calendars: the 2026 Australian Census is coming.

On 11 August, Australia will undertake its next Census of Population and Housing; the most comprehensive snapshot of the nation, capturing data for every person and place across the country. For location intelligence and site selection teams working in the Australian market, this is one of the richest data events on the calendar, offering insights down to small geographic areas and specific population groups.

For our global community who may not be familiar with how Census data flows through to platforms like ours, here's what to expect:

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) will release the data in three key stages:

πŸ—“οΈ June 2027 – First release: most topics, across nearly all geographic areas
πŸ—“οΈ October 2027 – Second release: employment-related data and location-based variables
πŸ—“οΈ Early–mid 2028 – Third release: more complex topics such as distance to work and Socio-Economic Indexes for Areas (SEIFA)

At GapMaps, we know timely data is critical to your decision-making. That's why we commit to updating our platform within 2 weeks of each ABS data release.

In the meantime, our population and age estimates are refreshed every April, so you're never working with stale numbers while you wait for the new Census data to roll in.

Whether you're planning site selection, market analysis, or trade area insights in Australia, we're making sure GapMaps keeps pace with the country's most authoritative data source.
