Hereโ€™s the good news โ†’ In FY26, productivity lifted for the first time in three years, even as headcount fell. Teams did more even with just fewer people.

The opportunity usually sits in plain sight. Small, invisible tasks, like pulling client document packs together, take up hours every week, and theyโ€™re often quick to fix once you spot them.

Billing rate on its own doesn't determine how well a firm performs. There are highly successful firms charging well under the industry median, and highly successful firms charging well above it. Billing rate is only one of the metrics that determine business performance and it should be balanced against everything else.

Data shows firms at 65+ seats land at a lower median rate ($225) than the 31-65 bracket ($238). It could be the resourcing model, it could be internal efficiency, the data doesn't settle it either way. What it does prove is that scale alone won't move your number.

Here's your winning move: Compare your rate to your band's median. Sitting near your band's P25? Depending on your strategy, that could be your quickest win this quarter, no new client, no new service line, no extra hire required.
