That’s because AI is helping scammers write emails, without the spelling mistakes and awkward English we used to look for.

So what should you do?
🔍If it’s unexpected, assume it’s a scam. Pause before clicking, replying or opening attachments.
🔍Check the full sender’s address and links for potential issues. Watch for misspellings and hover over links to check where they go.
🔍Don’t let the email rush you. Threats to suspend your account are designed to make you click.
🔍Verify with the company another way. Use its website or a trusted phone number, not contact details from the email. It’s better to be safe than sorry.
🔍Finally, report the email, and then delete it.

Instinct says start fixing things straight away. That's usually what makes it worse. The first hour matters most:
1️⃣ Disconnect affected devices — cable out, Wi-Fi off. Don't power down, it can wipe evidence.
2️⃣ Call your IT provider by phone, not email — the attacker may be watching your inbox.
3️⃣ Leave the evidence alone. No wiping, no reinstalling, just screenshots.
4️⃣ Money sent? Call your bank immediately and ask for a recall.
5️⃣ Reset passwords from a clean device and turn on MFA, starting with email and admin accounts.
6️⃣ Have a one-page incident response plan prepared — who to call, sorted in advance.

Then report it via ReportCyber, and don't pay a ransom on the spot — that's a decision for law enforcement and insurers, not a panicked first hour.
