You cleaned up your site... or at least thought about it. πŸ‘€ That's my dream for you, anyway. πŸ˜†

Now let's make sure it's not still a hot mess by March, 'kay? Good stuff.

Website maintenance sounds like a chore because... well it kind of is. Nah I can't lie to you, it definitely is at the start. 🀣 But breaking it into bite-sized tasks? WAY less painful. Tackling one thing per week means you get a functional site that works hard for you without the overwhelm. πŸ’ͺ🏼

Here's the 4-week overview:

W1: Image optimisation (file size and naming)
W2: Text hierarchy check
W3: Alt text on all images
W4: Meta title and description refresh

Swipe through for the full breakdown, including a little pep talk about finding what works for *you*.

Save it. Screenshot it. Send it to a biz mate who needs it. Tell me how much of it you're already doing. Tell me what you're gonna knock over first. Ask all the questions.

Or y'know... if you want me to handle it for you, I'm only a DM away. πŸ˜‰

New year energy has us all motivated to ✨tackle the stuff we ignore✨ (I'm guilty too, hi πŸ‘‹πŸΌ).

So from this web designer to you, here's a quick website health check to kick off 2026.

I'm talking broken links that lead to nowhere. Images straight from a camera that are tanking your site speed. Pages you forgot even existed. The stuff that makes your visitor bounce before they even know what you do.

Here's your 3-point new year audit checklist. 🀘🏼

#1: Header and footer check
Is your menu helping visitors navigate? Is your CTA button still your #1 goal? Does your copyright year still stay 2025? (fix it) Last thing: click every link.

#2: Full site walkthrough
Click through every page, test every button and link. If you can't be bothered, your visitors definitely can't.

#3: Mobile layout check
Squarespace has a Desktop and Mobile layout for your site. Make sure everything is sat neatly, in the right order. πŸ˜‰

These are the first things I look at (and yes, I'm doing it on my own site too because even web designers need to check themselves).

Takes maybe an hour, and makes you look like you're on top of your s**t this year. Win-win! πŸ₯³

If you find something wild, screenshot it and tag me, or just DM it to me. Ya gal loves a good 'the heck is this thing??' moment. 🀣

What's the key to standing out online? Being unapologetically YOU.

Building a business that reflects who I am has been one heck of a ride, and I’ve never fully shared it before. Scroll through the graphics to read it. πŸ€—

Story time. (I know how much you love hearing that from me 🀣)

I worked through Christmas and New Year. Why? Because I’m in that season where I’m the only person in my business (aka if I stop, the wheels stop turning) and I kinda really love having my own business so it's in my brain 24/7. πŸ˜…

BUT. My only task was to smash out my website redesign before January 13.

When I've been scrolling the past couple of weeks though, I noticed I am *beyond* over the endless 2025 planning and goal-setting posts. I get it - it’s the season for it - but it got a bit much for me. πŸ˜…

So as a result, I just didn't want to plan for this year. lol

(setting myself up for success, yes.)

Then this morning, I opened James Clear's newsletter, found this gem of a quote AND my north star for 2025 sparkling right there:

✨ Presence.

Last year, I put everything into engaging with other creatives, learning, and setting myself up for a productive 2025.

The thing that full-on nagged at the back of my brain though?

My kids mostly saw me at my desk. Or on my phone. I spent nights and weekends working.

And I wasn't sharing much of myself or my face online.

Deeeeefinitely needs improvement for any hopes of long term happiness. 🫠

Instead this year, I want all of my focus, goals and plans to centre around being present.

If the kids and Jeff are home, I'm hanging out with them.

I want to be sharing more online through blog posts, email newsletters, and right here on socials.

I did feel quite guilty that my Waffles got the chop last year as I pushed to get everything done by Christmas. But honestly? That comes down to lack of planning my social posts last year and just straight up losing the spark to share anything online. πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ

Once my website is live (which *is* on track for the 13th πŸ₯³) my long-missed content strategy planning task kicks off again. For socials, my goalposts are set at 2 feed posts per week and story posts every other day, which feels nice and attainable. πŸ’ͺ🏼

Soooo yeah. If you read this far, thank you. If you skim read, also thank you.

I'll see you again soon. 😘

Who do I work with?

Most business owners, actually - usually the ones who are done with DIY, but also the ones that need a helping hand, too.

However.

They don't expect to get a website in a day.

Or a week.

Those people are not my people. πŸ˜…

Even when someone is selling a 'website in a week' (or a bloody day 😀), what they forget to mention is the time spent planning and gathering everything required for that website to *exist* in a week. Or a day.

I mean, I could build one in a day, sure.

But it'll likely have numerous small mistakes I would likely miss spotting, lack detail AND it would *look* like it was built in a day.

That's not okay with me. πŸ™…πŸ»β€β™€οΈ

If it's not okay with you either, I have custom website project and website designer hire spots available leading up to late October/early November this year.

I'll make sure you get a kick-ass, error-free and freaking professional AF website ready to go for January 1st, 2025. 🀘🏼

Shoot me a DM, or email [email protected] if you're interested. 😁

I saw this quote from Jonathan Ive for the first time on Saturday, and it got me thinking.

"It's very easy to be different. But very difficult to be better."

When reading it, my mind immediately thought of how much of the past year I've agonised over what my point of difference is.

(Because being a web designer is a very popular career choice nowadays)

As someone who is well and truly in that 'everyperson' archetype, I think accepting that you're *not* for everyone is a discovery I really wish I'd made sooner. πŸ˜…β

The thing is though, I know what comes up repeatedly in feedback that *are* the points of difference to working with me, and how that makes me a better choice.

But I also understand how and what makes me someone a business *wouldn't* choose for their website project.

I'm just sharing these musings in case you're someone stuck in the endless loop of 'how do I stand out?'.

The kicker is that you've just gotta be yourself.

Isn't it amusing when the corny s**t is actually for real life? 😜🀣

(Am I posting a non-Waffle reel AND posting on the day I said I would? Who even am I?!)

(PS. My sincerest apologies to *everyone* using a screenreader for this caption. πŸ˜…)

Alright, so I love giving text this design treatment.. *but* there's a right way and a wrong way of doing it.

This is the style I'm talking about:

H E A D I N G

However, users with eyesight issues use a tool called a screen reader, and depending on your chosen method, that screen reader will either read this text as...

"H. E. A. D. I. N. G." (reading it letter-by-letter)

or "heading" (reading it as a word)

Basically, when a screen reader sees all capital letters, it delivers that word like an acronym. (eg. ASAP)

There are two ways to achieve this effect, but one is right, and one is wrong. Let's take a look at them!

❌ The wrong way to do it:
Use all capital letters and add spaces with your keyboard to create gaps between the letters.

βœ… The right way to do it:
Usually, this treatment is applied to headings, right? So let's pretend my above example uses a H2 tag.

In your CSS code, you would add:

h2 {
text-transform: uppercase;
letter-spacing: 10px;
}

Just in case you didn't read through the text on the carousel, this CSS tells the browser:
- All text on the page with 'h2' (heading 2) used needs to have this styling applied
- 'text-transform' tells the text to display as all uppercase letters
- 'letter-spacing' tells the text to display with a 10 pixel gap between each letter

By the way - this doesn't just apply to that 'spaced out' letters treatment. It applies *every time* you use consecutive capital letters!

Web accessibility is something that is *very* important to me, and I love sharing ways that can ensure your content is seen by everyone who comes across it.

Oh heeeeey! Where the heck have I been?

*I've Been Everywhere by Johnny Cash plays in the distance*

Family time, being sad about super rubbish rainy days that felt like they'd never go away, some sickness, finishing my copywriting project with Dan at Readcity for my website copy, *planning* new services, client work, part-time job, doomscrolling...

Everywhere but here, basically. πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ

Anyway, now I need to put some headphones on and focus. Less 'planning' and start doing. Ya know what I mean?

Speaking of doing - if you know someone who's looking for a website redesign or build in the coming months (including yourself), let me know.

New services and testing processes equal some niiice discounts for the lucky takers. πŸ˜‰

Oh hey. πŸ‘‹πŸ»

Right now, I'm laying the groundwork for what services I want to offer moving forward. It's giving me feels that frequently swap between excitement and overwhelm.. so I'm thinking that I am on the right path here.

I wish I found it easier to document what I'm doing though. I don't care for gatekeeping, and nothing is secret squirrels.. but I just don't know what to share from it.

If you have any tips for when you started doing it for yourself or your own biz, please send it my way.

My brain can't figure out why it should want to share content that isn't in some way useful to someone. Does anyone else feel that way? πŸ˜…

Anyway, that's my update for now. Hope you had a great start to the new week. πŸ€™πŸ»

PS. I've tried "just fkn do it woman" to see what happens and it turns out the tough love approach doesn't work with me, so I need a new angle. 🀣

I set an hour timer to create the graphic and write this caption, because I didn't want to overdo it.

Not even kidding. πŸ˜…

(the logic worked 😘)

My March was all over the shop. I had grand plans to showcase the wonderful women in my life, and then I hit pause.

My OG cat and bestie, Zutsuki took a sudden turn in the first week of March, and 3 hours after her consult, she was put to sleep. 🀍

My MacBook, a gift to myself for starting a new business, (and purchased with my redundancy payment, what a kick in the guts 😫), decided it didn't wanna live without me spending more money than I had available to fix it. Cool cool cool cool cooooool.

I had a whirlwind trip to Brisbane to shoot the final workout of the 2024 CrossFit Open at my old second home, CrossFit TARIS. Loved that part. (Looking at the photos now though, the shots were missing a lot of the life I usually find in its wonderful members..)

Lexi finished her first term of Prep! I'm so proud of her, she took to "big school" like it was nothing new to her. πŸ₯°

Got cracking on my voice guide with Readcity, too. Again, a massive positive. ✨

And seeing Pink in Townsville was an absolute party. πŸ₯³ Gambling on a North Queensland stadium absolutely paid off, I can't wait to see more shows up here in the future. 🀘🏻

Buuuut the rest of the month, I let all the negative stuff take control.. and I was beyond tired.

It was absolutely a run of s**t luck, I'm sure we can all agree, but now, the new month has kicked in and it's time to get back on track. 😎

What do you do when a day isn't enough to share how much you love the women in your life?

You shower them with appreciation the ENTIRE MONTH. πŸ₯³

It felt the most fitting to share my OG biz cheerleaders, Hayley and Katy from Oh My Digital first!

Story time. πŸ›‹οΈ

Way back in 2021, I signed up for the All-Stars membership to learn the ins and outs of online marketing for small businesses... because I had zero idea what I was doing. 🀣

I showed up to as many Zoom calls as I could (usually with Lexi hanging out as well!), learned a f**k-tonne, and gained mentors in 2 women I also consider good mates today.

Best. Story. Ever. πŸ‘ŒπŸ»

Thank you girls! πŸ₯°

There’s always something new to learn.

At the end of the day, the choice to be creative outside of work hours should be as fun as possible. So while Akiko Art & Design is having a rebirth of sorts in 2019, I want to start from scratch and keep things as simple as possible.

Majority of my creative career development to date has stemmed from seeing what I liked, then learning how to do it. My new love? Photography.

There will most likely be a considerable amount of new photos being added here (mostly ones taken at one of my homes away from home - CrossFit 189), but I’m also looking forward to getting back into my past life of illustration and watercolour painting.

If I can help out with anything, as always, please reach out to me at [email protected] or message this page. Otherwise, I hope my future posts and creations are worth sticking around for!
